California, Stanford Battling During Thursday Prelims at Pac 12s
FEDERAL WAY – California and Stanford set up what should be a ferocious finals session as the two put up some seriously strong qualifying efforts at the Pac 12 Women’s Championships.
500 free
Freshman Cierra Runge, after being part of an American record relay last night, nearly tracked down Missy Franklin’s meet record with a sizzling 4:35.92 in prelims.
That swim is just a bit off Franklin’s 4:35.73 from 2013 and within striking distance of Runge’s seed time of 4:34.81 that puts her in line for the Pac 12 Conference record of 4:34.48 set by Haley Anderson in 2012.
USC’s Chelsea Chenault (4:40.01) and Arizona’s Bonnie Brandon (4:40.57) placed second and third this morning with Franklin electing to swim the 200 IM instead of the 500 free this year.
California collected four qualifiers, two in the A final and two in the B final, while Arizona went 1-1-2 for four qualifiers.

Bypassing the 500 free that was on her championship schedule as a freshman, California sophomore Missy Franklin hit the wall in 1:55.46 to pace qualifying in the 200 IM.
That was part of a ridiculous 1-2-3-4 effort from California. Elizabeth Pelton (1:55.82), Kelly Naze (1:56.80) and Celina Li (1:56.97) picked up the next three qualifying spots for the Golden Bears
