The California men’s swimming & diving team displayed its depth Friday in the annual Triple Distance Meet against rival Stanford. Highlighting the Golden Bears’ strong effort was senior Destin Lasco, who swept all three individual medley distances.

A non-team-scoring meet, the Triple Distance Meet splits swimmers into event groups (butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, sprint freestyle, distance free and individual medley) and requires swims at three different distances within the event: 50, 100 and 200 yards in the fly, breast, back and sprint free; 200, 500, 1,000 in the distance free; and 100, 200 and 400 in the IM.

Cal won nine of the 19 events, including the sweep from Lasco in the IM (100: 51.13; 100: 1:49.44; 400: 3:55.26). Cal also swept the 200 medley relay and 200 free relay. In the 200 free, the quartet of Lasco, Jack Alexy, Colby Hatton and Liam Bell finished with a time of 1:18.99. In the 200 medley relay Cal’s team of Gabriel Jett, Jacob Soderlund, Dare Rose and Bjorn Seeliger finished ahead of Stanford’s team by two-hundredths of a second with a time of 1:26.90.

Soderlund had a stellar day for the Bears. He nearly swept the breaststroke events, winning the 50 (25.0) and 100 (54.73). He missed out on the sweep after finishing second in the 200 breast by two-hundredths of a second, finishing with a time of 1:58.36.

In the sprint free group, Cal’s Seeliger won the 50 free (19.62) and took third in the 100 (43.50). Jack Alexy finished third in the 50 (19.77) and took second in the 100 (43.44). Stanford swept the 200.

In the 200 butterfly, Dare Rose took first with a time of 1:46.71. In doing so he prevented Stanford’s Rafael Gu from sweeping the butterfly event. Gu was victorious in the 50 and 100 fly.

The Cardinal’s Aaron Sequeira swept the backstroke events.

Cal will turn its attention to the divers, who will compete next at the Ohio State Fall Invitational at the McCorkle Aquatic Center in Columbus, Ohio Nov. 16-19. Cal’s swimmers will return to the pool Nov. 29 – Dec. 2 when they travel to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for the annual Minnesota Invitational at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center.
