Cal Men Swim to Win over Utah to Open Pac-12 Season
The Cal men’s swimming & diving team opened up Pac-12 play with a dominating performance on Wednesday afternoon, defeating visiting Utah 185-107 at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
The Bears won 12 of 14 events with the final two events (100 butterfly and 200 individual medley) being raced as exhibitions.
Cal opened the dual sweeping the 200 medley relay. The quartet of Sebastian Somerset, Luke Rodarte, Dare Rose, and Bjorn Seeliger finished first with a time of 1:27.17. It was one of two events on the day swept by the Golden Bears. Cal also swept the 200 free.
In the individual events, freshman Matthew Chai had a terrific showing in the 1000 free, winning with a time of 9:07.33, earning his first collegiate dual meet victory. Coming in second in the event was junior Jack Meehan who clocked in with a time of 9:16.80.
Gabriel Jett won the 200 yard freestyle, it was one of two events he finished in first, the other was the 100 fly that was raced as an exhibition. Jett’s time in the free was 1:35.58. Second and third went to Cal’s Robin Hanson (1:36.56) and Patrick Callan (1:36.89).
Dare Rose won the 200 fly with a time of 1:46.64. Bjorn Seeliger won the 100 free with a time of 42.79. Colby Mefford won the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:43.44 and Reece Whitley dominated the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a time of 1:55.00.
UP NEXT
Cal will return to the pool on Thursday, October 27 when Pacific comes to Spieker Aquatics Complex for a dual meet. The time is still to be determined.
