Cal Lands In-Sate Verbal from Olympic Trials Qualifier Abigail Herscu for 2022-23
NEW COMMIT: Breaststroker Abigail Herscu of Livermore, Calif. has pledged her in-state verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley beginning in the fall of 2022.
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I chose to swim at Cal because it has consistently been one of the best swim teams in the country. It is also one of the best schools in the country. They have an incredible coaching staff with amazing resources as well as a great group of swimmers. They have also produced many Olympians and national team members. It will be nice to stay in the East Bay close to home with my new Cal family.”
Herscu, who does her club swimming with the Livermore Aqua Cowboys, finished 18th in both the 100m and 200m breast at the Toyota U.S. Open to achieve the Olympic Trials cuts. She also swept both breaststroke events at East LA Sectionals last December.
In Summer 2019, she notched four best times at Arena Western Zones before going on to take sixth in the 200m breast at Junior Nationals.
Her best times include:
- 100 breast – 1:02.46
- 200 breast – 2:13.11
- 200 IM – 2:05.41
- 400 IM – 4:30.42
- 200 fly – 2:07.16
- 100 fly – 57.48
Currently a junior at Granada High School, Herscu placed sixth in the 100 breast as a freshman at the CIF State Championships. A week prior, she finished fourth in the 100 breast and ninth in the 200 IM at the CIF North Coast Section Championships.
Herscu will add valuable depth to the Bears’ lineup and will join a training group led by Emma Davidson, Alicia Henry, and Melanie Julia. She would’ve scored in the B-final of the 200 breast as well as the C-final of the 100 breast at the 2020 Pac-12 Championships.
