The Cal Golden Bears finished the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships with a new NCAA Record in the 400 free relay on Saturday night in Austin, Texas. The team of Izzy Ivey (47.79), Katie McLaughlin (46.62), Amy Bilquist (46.48) and Abbey Weitzeil (46.07) swam a 3:06.96 to take down the record they set at Pac-12’s at 3:07.41. It will not count as an American Record because of Weitzeil’s wrapped arm.

Cal was trailing the whole race behind Michigan as the Wolverines finished in second at 3:08.07. The team of Maggie MacNiel (47.04), Siobhan Haughey (46.44), Catie DeLoof (46.91) and Daria Pyshnenko (47.68) swam for the Wolverines in their highest relay finish of the meet. They were also second in the 200 free relay as the Wolverines placed third as a team.

Stanford officially won the team title and finished third in the relay. The team of Lauren Pitzer (48.29), Ella Eastin (47.54), Amalie Fackenthal (48.25) and Taylor Ruck (45.65) swam for the Cardinal and were third at 3:09.73.

The quickest splits outside the top three came from Louisville’s Mallory Comerford (46.78), Tennessee’s Erika Brown (47.28), Auburn’s Aly Tetzloff (47.32) and Texas’ Grace Ariola (47.50).

Texas (3:10.89), Louisville (3:11.24), Auburn (3:11.64), Tennessee (3:12.20) and Virginia (3:12.85) also swam in the A-Final.

Cal now has three NCAA titles in the 400 free relay. The 2019 team joins the teams from 2007 and 2009 as winners of the event for the Golden Bears.

Didn’t they say it can’t be an American record since Weitzel had a wrap on?

Thats right. It’s an NCAA & U.S. Open record, but because of the wrap, was ineligible for the American record.
