The California Golden Bears crushed the 200 free relay NCAA, American and US Open Records on Thursday night at the 2019 NCAA Division I Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships. The team of Maddie Murphy (21.82), Katie McLaughlin (21.37), Amy Bilquist (20.87) and Abbey Weitzeil (20.49) swam a 1:24.55 to take almost a full second off the 1:25.43 record that Stanford set last year.

Weitzeil’s split was the second fastest split ever as Simone Manuel was a 20.45 last year on the end of Stanford’s 200 medley relay. Cal won the race by almost two full seconds as Michigan (1:26.25) and Stanford (1:26.50) finished in second and third.

It was a very tight battle the front half with NC State leading the way as the Wolfpack ended up in fifth place at 1:26.73. Louisville out-touched them for fourth at 1:26.71.

Michigan’s Maggie MacNeil (21.57), Catie DeLoof (21.59), Siobhan Haughey (21.44) and Daria Pyshnenko (21.65) finished in second as the Wolverines got the night started in a big, big way, moving up from fifth to second.

Stanford’s team was rather excited after freshman Anya Goeders (21.66) touched the wall in third for the Cardinal. Taylor Ruck (21.73), Lauren Pitzer (21.66) and Amalie Fackenthal (21.45) swam on the youngest relay in the top eight. Pitzer, a sophomore, is the oldest on the relay as the other three are all freshmen.

The quickest splits outside the top three came from Louisville’s Mallory Comerford (21.00), Tennessee’s Erika Brown (21.35), NC State’s Kylee Alons (21.37) and Auburn’s Aly Tetzloff (21.55).

Cal now six NCAA titles in the 200 free relay. The 2019 team joins the teams from 2000, 11, 15-17 as NCAA Champions in the event.
