Cal Beats USC in Overtime

LOS ANGELES, CA – No. 2-ranked California scored a goal in each overtime period to post a 10-8 victory over No. 3 ranked USC Sunday in a non-conference meeting at USC’s McDonald Swim Stadium.

With the score tied 8-8 going into overtime (which consists of two 3-minute periods), the Bears’ Phinney Gardner scored a 6-on-5 goal with 1:25 left to play in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Chris Dornin scored with 1:38 to play.

USC trailed 7-5 going into the final period of play but scored 3 unanswered goals, the last by Simun Cimerman, to take an 8-7 lead with 1:26 left to play. But Cal had 3 shot opportunities–the last with 2 Trojans ejected–and finally tied the score on Brent Albright’s shot with 9 seconds left to send the game into overtime.

Senior Mateo Juric, who missed USC’s first 8 games this year with an injured wrist, returned to action and scored 2 goals today.
