Caeleb Dressel appeared on NBC’s Today Show to discuss his recent successes at the FINA World Swimming Championships in Gwangju, South Korea. Dressel won six gold medals at Worlds and also won two silver medals. But his best achievement was probably his world record in the 100 fly that took down Michael Phelps’ 2009 mark of 49.82. Dressel swam a 49.50.
Dressel also broke two American records in the 50 (21.04) and 100 free (46.96), swimming the fastest time in textile in both events. He was a part of both gold medal winning 4×100 free relays, swimming a 47.63 to lead off the men’s relay and a 47.34 to lead off the mixed relay. Dressel also had the fastest split of all-time in the 100 fly with a 49.33 on the mixed 4×100 medley relay that got beat by Australia. He went faster on the last night of the meet in the men’s 4×100 medley relay with a 49.28 butterfly split.

Dressel discussed how he reacted to such a successful meet at Worlds, saying the medals were “just pieces of metal.” He was asked about what it was like breaking Phelps’ world record and if he thought he had a chance to get it.
Dressel also talked about his post-Worlds meals where he was finally able to indulge himself with some unhealthy foods and how he is going to refocus to sustain his success next year for the Olympic Games in Tokyo. Dressel will be aiming to make his second Olympic team and will also be looking to win his first individual Olympic medals in his career. He was sixth in the 100 free in Rio at the last Olympics but also led off the gold medal winning 4×100 free relay at finals and swam the freestyle leg on the 4×100 medley relay team in the heats.
“It’s pretty cool to watch the sport come full circle like that.” @caelebdressel talks about the surreal feeling of breaking @MichaelPhelps’ 100m butterfly world record.
