Butterflyer Armando Vegas Will Become a Longhorn with 2020 Verbal to Texas
NEW COMMIT: The University of Texas has gained a new verbal commitment for their class of 2024 from Danville, Calif. butterflyer and current high school junior Armando Vegas.
Vegas, who does his club swimming with Crow Canyon Country Club Sharks, owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 100m fly with the U.S. Open cut in the 200m fly. He most recently competed in a pair of events at Carlsbad Speedo Sectionals and placed 22nd in the 200 fly at Juniors West in December. He capped off his successful long course season as the 200m fly runner-up at Santa Clarita Sectionals before going on to race both fly events at Junior Nationals. Also competing for San Ramon Valley High School, Vegas competed in the 100 fly at the CIF State Championships during his sophomore season.
He told Swimming World:
“I’m very excited to commit to the University of Texas. The incredible team atmosphere, amazing coaching staff, and superior academics are a combination that is unmatched. I want to thank my coaches, family, and friends for helping me along this journey. Hook ‘em!”
His best times include:
- 100 fly – 50.01
- 200 fly – 1:49.26
- 200 free – 1:41.98
- 500 free – 4:49.65
Vegas has made significant improvements over the past two years, shaving off three seconds in his 100 fly (nine for 100m fly) and 10 seconds in his 200 fly (13 for 200m fly). When he arrives in Austin at the start of the 2020-21 season, he’ll add his talents to a training group that’ll be led by Andrew Koustik and Sam Pomajevich.
