Palo Alto Stanford Aquatics will send two swimmers to Bob Bowman’s team at Arizona State University next fall, as Joe Molinari announced that he will be a Sun Devil in 2016.
“After my recruit trip to ASU, I realized I can achieve both my swimming and academic goals at ASU,” Molinari said. “Bob and all of the coaches were great, and I had a blast with the guys. Never in a million years did I ever think Bob Bowman would be my coach, and that dream is about to become a reality!”
Molinari joins fellow PASA teammate Chloe Isleta in next year’s freshman class. Like Isleta, Molinari has great potential in the IM events. He’ll swim the 400 IM at the Olympic Trials with a time of 4:26.57 from last summer’s junior nationals, where he was seventh in the final.
Molinari likely was drawn to Bowman for the work the legendary coach has done with Michael Phelps in butterfly. Molinari has an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:01.68 in the 200 butterfly, and is within a second of the Trials cut in the 100 fly with a 55.58 lifetime best. Molinari will also work with 200 fly Olympic champion Misty Hyman, who revolutionized the sport with her underwater kicking skills.
In short course yards, Molinari has the potential to be a Pac 12 scorer for the Sun Devils, especially in the 400 IM where he holds a personal best of 3:51.87. As for his 200 fly, there’s scoring potential with a lifetime best 1:48.02 just outside of qualifying into the top 16.
Though the 200 fly is likely to be Molinari’s event on the final day of the conference championships, he can also contribute in the 200 back during the dual meet season. He has a best time of 1:47.15 from earlier this year. He’s also got potential to swim on the 800 free relay for the Sun Devils, with a 1:39.77 to his credit in the 200 free.
Maybe you should post commitment articles for athletes going somewhere other than Arizona State.
