Budapest 2024, Day 3 Finals: Qin Haiyang Comes Through To Take 100m Breaststroke In Championship & Asian Records
Qin Haiyang came through in the final couple of metres to claim the 100m breaststroke title in Championship and Asian records at short-course worlds in Budapest.
Neutral athlete Kirill Prigoda had led throughout inside WR pace but the Chinese drew onto his shoulder in the final metres before getting the touch in 55.47 to 55.49. Ilya Shymanovich was third in 55.60.
Qin, who won an historic treble at the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, was third at the final turn, 0.36 behind leader Prigoda and 0.34 behind world record-holder Shymanovich.
However, a final 25 of 14.72 propelled the Chinese swimmer into the wall before he hauled himself on to a lane rope to celebrate.
It was the first world short-course title of Qin’s career and he said: “What can I say? First of all, the Russian and the Belorussian are very strong swimmers. Even before the championships, I didn’t have 100% confidence in winning. But I believed in my tactics and I won in the end!”
As neutral athletes, Prigoda, of Russia, and Belarusian Shymanovich cannot speak to media.
