Brunswick, Cheverus, Greely and Cape Elizabeth Win Team Titles in Maine High School State Swimming

BRUNSWICK – Brunswick High School, Cheverus High School, Greely High School and Cape Elizabeth High School took home the team trophies in Class A and Class B earlier this week at the Maine High School State Swimming and Diving Championships.

Girls Class A

Host Brunswick High School came away with the girls’ team title in a tight battle between the top four teams. Only 30 points separated first from fourth, with Brunswick scoring 246 points to finish ahead of Cheverus (230 points) and Kennebunk (217 points).

Biddeford’s Mariah Brady doubled up at the meet, claiming both sprint freestyle titles with a 24.57 in the 50 free and a 53.67 in the 100 free. Kennebunk’s Marshall Lowery also won two events, topping the 200 IM in 2:13.04 and the 100 back in 57.12, a new meet record.

Bangor High School captured the 200 medley relay title in 1:55.35, while Brunswick swept the freestyle relays with a 1:44.43 in the 200 and a 3:45.82 in the 400.

Boys Class A

Cheverus High School earned a 100-point victory over Brunswick in the boys’ meet, scoring 360 points to 260. Bangor rounded out the top three with 257 points.

Falmouth’s Jake Perron took home two individual state titles in the mid-distance freestyle races as he posted a 1:41.32 in the 200 free and a 4:38.71 in the 500 free. Westbrook’s Greg Violette also emerged a double winner, posting nearly identical times in winning the 100 fly (52.01) and 100 back (52.10).

Brunswick swam away with the 200 medley title in 1:41.01, while Cheverus claimed the 200 free relay in 1:29.51 and the 400 free relay in 3:19.31.

Girls Class B

Greely High School edged Mount Desert Island High School by just half a point for the Class B team title, with Greely scoring 350.5 points and Mount Desert scoring 350. Cape Elizabeth finished third overall with 181 points.

Mount Desert Island’s Leila Johnston was the class of the field in the freestyle events, posting a 1:50.63 in the 200 free and a 51.02 in the 100 free. Johnston’s teammate, Lydia DaCorte, also won two events; first, she swam a 58.69 in the 100 fly, then minutes later recorded a 31-second victory in the 500 free with a 5:08.45. Catherine McAuley’s Ana Neff-Jendrasko picked up two wins of her own in the 200 IM (2:12.60) and 100 back (1:00.52).

Mount Desert Island swept all three relays, with victories in the 200 medley relay (1:53.09), 200 free relay (1:39.46) and 400 free relay (3:46.26).

Boys Class B

Cape Elizabeth brought home the boys’ team title with 275 points in a close team race that featured four teams within 60 points of each other. Morse took second with 241 points, edging Mount Desert Island (229 points) by 12 points.

Harry Homans played a key role in Cape Elizabeth’s team victory, as he won two individual events at the meet. Homans topped the 200 IM in 1:58.78, then followed that up with a 4:48.12 in the 500 free, an event he won by more than 10 seconds. Ellsworth’s Talor Hamilton was the only other double event winner in Class B, taking home state titles in the 100 fly (51.73) and 100 back (52.26).

Ellsworth won the 200 medley relay in 1:41.65, while Camden Hills Regional topped the 200 free relay (1:31.88) and 400 free relay (3:21.52).
