31-year-old Bruno Fratus out-touched Caeleb Dressel in the 50 freestyle at Mission Viejo at the TYR Pro Swim Series as the gold and silver medalist from the last two Worlds lined up alongside each other in southern California in a battle of the titans.
Fratus won the matchup with a 21.80 to Dressel’s 21.83 as Fratus is using this meet as a chance to qualify for the Olympic Games for Brazil, as this would be his third trip if he is to get selected.
American Olympic favorites Michael Andrew (22.13) and Nathan Adrian (22.29) placed third and fourth in the one-lapper as they both look to factor into the 50 free at Olympic Trials in June.
Also in the race, 35-year-old Matt Targett, who swam at Auburn and at two Olympics for Australia, placed eighth at 22.62 in his swimming comeback.
Abbey Weitzeil threw down a 24.57 in the 50 freestyle on Saturday morning at the TYR Pro Swim Series in Mission Viejo as her time is the fastest any American has been this year, lowering her own season best of 24.9 from January. Weitzeil is aiming for her second Olympics as she swam the 50 and 100 free in Rio and looks to be a big favorite to do that again in Tokyo five years later.
Team Rebel’s Kasia Wasick, who represents Poland internationally, was second at 24.73 in lowering her own season best time. She was a star in the ISL this season for the New York Breakers. Another ISL star, Beryl Gastaldello, was third here in California with a 25.18 ahead of Kelsi Dahlia (25.30) and Kalia Antoniou (25.30).
