Brooke Forde figured she could lay down a strong swim in the women’s 400 IM at U.S. Nationals, but she didn’t expect to be turning for the freestyle leg with the lead. And she certainly didn’t expect to touch the wall second in 4:35.09 and qualify for the Pan Pacific Championships, her first meet with the top U.S. squad.
Afterwards, in a state of shock and excitement, Forde broke down what she was thinking as she saw that she was putting herself in position to qualify for the meet. She also explained what it means to her to be going to Tokyo with the American team and what it was like to have such strong support from her excited teammates, who raced over to hug her when they saw her result.
