British Trials, Day 5 Prelims: Abbie Wood Posts 2:11 In 200IM; Keanna Macinnes In Quest For Fly Double
Abbie Wood was 2.5secs clear in the 200IM prelims as she looks to book an individual berth at the Paris Games, three years after fourth in Tokyo.
Keanna Macinnes returned after securing her place in the 200 fly to qualify second for the 100 final.
Women’s 100m Butterfly
Harriet Jones booked lane four in 58.44 ahead of Macinnes who clocked 58.78 with Lucy Grieve (58.95) and 200 silver medallist Laura Stephens (58.97) making it four women on 58.
Ciara Schlossan was fifth into the final in 1:00.02 with Eva Okaro – winner of 50 free silver – posting the sixth-fastest time of 1:00.14 before withdrawing from the final.
Shannon Stott (1:00.68), Hollie Widdows (1:00.73) and Holly Hibbott (1:00.76) complete the field into the final.
Women’s 200IM
Wood booked her place in 2:11.33 with Katie Shanahan – with second places in the 4IM and 200 back – also through in second in 2:13.83.
Freya Colbert, who booked her Olympic berth in the 400IM, progressed in 2:14.26 followed by European junior champion Leah Schlossan (2:15.20), Tokyo Olympian Alicia Wilson (2:15.91) and Phoebe Cooper (2:16.43).
Candice Hall and Elizabeth Booker were seventh and eighth into the final in 2:17.01 and 2:17.28 respectively.
On how she balances doing a 2:11 and conserving energy given it’s straight heats to final, Wood told Swimming World:
“I think for me the heats are always practice. I never have a time in my head, never have an effort in my head.
“It’s more I went 100 big and smooth and then put the pressure on the back end.
“So I know how the back end should feel tonight and then put some pressure on the front end tonight as well.
“So, I’ve practiced my back end and tonight I’ll just be trying to turn up the front end.
“I think sometimes I might try harder than I need to but it’s how confident I feel going into the final that matters more to me.
“If I’m confident in my head that’ll do as much for me as saving my body so I just think I wanted some practice and seeing how I was feeling his morning so I am happy with the 2:11.”
