British Trials, Day 5 Finals: Keanna Macinnes Completes Fly Double With 100 Victory

Keanna Macinnes came from second at halfway to add the 100 fly to her 200 title and complete the double at the Aquatics Centre.

The qualification time of 57.17 was 0.08 inside Ellen Gandy’s British record of 57.25 that has stood since March 2012 at the inaugural event at the Aquatics Centre.

The top 21 British times in history have all been posted by women who are no longer competing with Gandy head of the pile followed by Fran Halsall (57.40), Jemma Lowe (57.43), Siobhan O’Connor (57.45) and Rachael Kelly (57.71).

Next in the British rankings is Harriet Jones with a PB of 57.79 and it was the Welshwoman who led at the turn from Macinnes in 26.86 to 27.09.

The University of Stirling swimmer came back in 30.83 to come past Jones and touch in a Scottish record of 57.92, the only woman inside 58.

Stirling teammate Lucy Grieve was second in 58.31 with Laura Stephens third in 58.68, 0.13 ahead of Jones also on a 58 (58.81).

Ciara Schlosshan (59.49), Hollie Widdows (59.83), Shannon Stott (1:00.45) and Holly Hibbott (1:01.38) completed the field.

Having already qualified in the 200, Macinnes spoke in the difference in build-up to the shorter race, saying:

“I think having got a nomination time on Tuesday I was far more relaxed going into that race, which meant I could probably take a bigger risk. I was trying to make sure I was out with Harriet as she’s always fast in the first 50, then just come back as strong as I could.

“There was definitely a weight off my shoulders tonight, going in to the race I was a lot more relaxed, but there was still a lot of adrenaline, fighting for that double, because that’s always nice, and now I can also get my name to the medley relay.

“It’s the longest I’ve had between races at trials so it was nice that I could really relax, not stress on Tuesday night about getting to sleep.

“It wasn’t ideal not sleeping but I was buzzing from the 200 on Tuesday. Obviously not having to stress that I was having to race in a couple of days was really nice and I felt I could re-set on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and back on it tonight.

“I think I’ve been the most consistent in training that I’ve been probably ever in my life this year.”
