Breaststroker Kevin Zahariev Announces Verbal Commitment to Fordham University
NEW COMMIT: Fordham University has picked up a new in-state verbal commitment for the 2021-22 season and beyond from breaststroker Kevin Zahariev of Middle Village, N.Y.
He will join Bellingham, Wash. native Evan Trout as a member of the Rams’ Class of 2025.
He told Swimming World:
“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career as a D1 athlete at Fordham University! I would like to thank my family, coaches, and friends for helping me along the way. I can’t wait to be part of this amazing team. GO RAMS!!”
Zahariev trains year-round with Laguardia Aquatic Club and placed 17th in the 100m breast at Metropolitan Seniors in February. In summer 2019, he finaled in both the 100m and 200m breast at Metropolitan LCM Seniors before going on to final in the former event at Eastern Zone Seniors.
His best times include:
- 50 breast – 27.21
- 100 breast – 58.33
- 200 breast – 2:12.64
- 200 IM – 2:00.02
Also competing for Brooklyn Technical High School, Zahariev has competed at the New York Federation Championships the last two seasons. As a junior, he finished 10th in the 100 breast and also competed in the 200 IM.
He will be a valuable asset to the Rams’ lineup when he suits up for them in the fall of 2021. He will join a training group that’ll include Julius Ekstrand and Patrick Wilson, and he would’ve been Fordham’s fifth-fastest 100 breaststroker last season.
