Brazilian Trials: Maria Fernanda Costa Record in 800 Free Seals 18-Strong Brazil Team
Maria Fernanda Costa set the Brazilian record in the women’s 800 free Saturday night at Brazilian Trials, finalizing an 18-strong delegation for the Paris Olympics.
Costa bossed the final in 8:28.92. That is an Olympic B standard (the A cut is 8:26.71). It downs the record set in 2022 by Viviane Jungblut at 8:30.84. It’s Costa’s second record of the week at the meet in Rio, to go with a South American record in the 200 free, and it augments the Brazilian record she set in the 400 free Worlds in Doha earlier this year.

The win also led a 1-2-3 finish by the Unisanta team, with Gabrielle Roncatto second in 8:33.33 and Beatriz Dizotti third .02 back. That helped the team based in Santos win the team title. With 335 points, Costa was the high individual scorer.
That was one of four finals on the final night of the meet. Gui Caribe won the men’s 50 freestyle in an Olympic A cut tie. The University of Tennessee swimmer, who earlier had won the 100 free in an A cut, went 21.88, under the A cut of 21.96.
Luiz Gustavo was second in 22.05, with Pedro Spajari and Gustavo Santos tying for second in 22.18.
Guilherme Costa delivered an Olympic B cut in winning the 800 free with a time of 7:53.04. The A standard is 7:51.65. Costa was the to male scorer at 155 points, also for Unisanta.
The women’s 50 free went to Lorrane Ferreira, who went 25.09. Stephanie Balduccini was second in 25.24, ahead of Ana Carolina Vieira’s 25.33. All are shy of the consideration standard.
That leaves 18 Brazilians bound for Paris. Eleven are holdovers from the Tokyo team.
