Brazilian Trials: Kayky Mota Wins 100 Fly to Confirm Paris Spot

Kayky Mota won the men’s 100 butterfly Friday night at Brazilian Olympic Trials, confirming his spot in the event at the Paris Olympic Games.

Mota went 52.56 to win the event, just edging out a fast field behind him. The former University of Tennessee swimmer had guaranteed for his country a spot in Paris with his A cut of 51.43 from the 2023 World Championships in Fukuoka, which was an A cut.

Mota faced a difficult field in the final. Vini Lanza was second in 52.63. Guilherme Rosolen finished third in 52.65, with Lucio Paula fourth in 52.68. The A cut is 51.67, the B cut 51.93.

The fifth day of the meet in Rio included no new A cuts, but it did produce victories for three swimmers who have already qualified for Paris this week.

Nick Albiero, who passed up on the 100 fly after winning the 200 fly in an A cut earlier this week, added the 200 backstroke national title. He was the only one to break two minutes with a time of 1:59.26, nearly a second and a half ahead of Samuel Lopes. Veteran Leonardo de Deus was third. The A cut is 1:57.50.

Gabrielle Roncatto added another title in the women’s 400 individual medley. Her time of 4:47.32 was nearly four seconds clear of the field (though nine seconds shy of the A cut). Maria Luiza Pessanha prevailed in the women’s 200 fly in 2:12.50, just edging out Maria Fernanda Costa by .09 seconds. Beatriz Dizotti was third.

Alexia Tavares Assuncao won the women’s 200 back in 2:15.48.
