In 2018, Bobby Finke finished second in the 1500 free behind veteran distance swimmer Jordan Wilimovsky. The same was true in 2017, except that time it was True Sweetser who got the better of him.

But 2019 was going to be different.

Finke had been using that runner-up feeling and the knowledge that his competitors are training hard as motivation in the lead-up to the Phillips 66 U.S. National Championships and it paid off. Finke handily won the men’s 1500 free (14:51.15), stopping the clock a stunning 4.95 seconds ahead of second place finisher Zane Grothe.

Now that Finke has achieved his goal of a National Championship title in the men’s 1500 free, he can turn his attention to the 400 IM. He is also slated to swim the 400 and 800 free distances.
