Big Ten Women’s Championships: Ohio State Earns 1-2 Finish in Butterfly, Breaks Meet Record in 200 Free Relay

The 2023 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued from Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the Day 3 finals.

The second-day events are the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, followed by 3-meter diving and the 200 free relay. The Buckeyes broke the meet record in the 200 free relay to cap a five-win night.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Butterfly

Ohio State completed a 1-2 sweep in the 100 butterfly to start the evening.

Junior Katherine Zenick won the event in 51.48, ahead of senior teammate Morgan Kraus (51.58), both holding their seeds from prelims with NCAA “B” cuts.

Northwestern senior Miriam Guevara was a hundredth behind Kraus in 51.59.

Wisconsin senior Mallory Jump was fourth (52.15), followed by Ohio State junior Tristan Harrison (52.34).

Big Ten Women’s 400 IM

Ohio State kept the momentum rolling with a win in the 400 IM. Senior Felicia Pasadyn won the event in 4:03.62, an NCAA “A” cut and a pool record.

The mark was one hundredth of a second faster than OSU’s Lindsay Clary‘s time in 2016.

The Buckeyes also went 3-4 with Kyra Sommerstad (4:10.34) and Jessica Eden (4:10.85), both finishing behind Minnesota’s Megan Van Berkom (4:04.86), who finished second.

Ohio State’s win streak was broken by Indiana’s Anna Peplowski, who win in 1:43.33.

Ohio State’s Amy Fulmer was second in 1:43.45 to still give 28 points to the Buckeyes.

Michigan freshman Katie Crom was third in 1:44.11, followed by Wisconsin sophomore Abby Carlson (1:44.29).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Breast

Ohio State was back on the top of the podium again in the 100 breaststroke, with another 1-2 finish.

Hannah Bach won the race in 58.19, finishing one tenth of a second ahead of teammate Josie Panitz (58.29).

Michigan sophomore Letitia Sim was third in 58.71, ahead of Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski (59.10) and Northwestern’s Hannah Brunzell (59.76).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Backstroke

Ohio State won yet another race to close the individual swimming events for the night.

Sophomore Nyah Funderburke won the race in 51.52, an NCAA “B” cut.

Indiana’s Anna Peplowski took second in 51.72, holding off Wisconsin junior Phoebe Bacon (51.96).

Completing a double, Ohio State’s Morgan Kraus was fourth in 52.31 and Northwestern’s Miriam Guevara was fifth (52.34).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Free Relay

Ohio State made a statement in the final event of the night. After already dominating the individual events, the Buckeyes broke the Big Ten meet record in the 200 free relay.

Ohio State finished in 1:26.70, breaking the previous mark of 1:26.74 set by Michigan in 2022.

Zenick led off in a 22.08, followed by Funderburke (21.86), Teresa Ivan (21.69) and Fulmer (21.07).

Indiana was second with Anna Peplowski, Kristina Paegle, Ashley Turak and Elizabeth Broshears finishing in 1:27.70.

Also earning an “A” cut was Michigan with Lindsay Flynn, Claire Newman, Natalie Kan and Brady Kendall touching in 1:27.91.
