The 2023 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued from Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the first morning of prelims.
After the first day of finals, consisting of two relays, Indiana held a slim two-point lead over defending champion Ohio State, followed by host Michigan.
The Day 2 prelims session consists of the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle, followed by diving.
Here is a look at each event from the morning:
Big Ten Women’s 500 Free
Wisconsin showcased its distance prowess by placing three swimmers int he top six in the 500 freestyle prelims.
Sophomore Abby Carlson took the top seed in 4:39.28, while Blair Stoneburg was fourth (4:41.52) and Paige McKenna was sixth (4:41.67).
Indiana also placed three in the finals with sophomore Mariah Denigan taking the second seed in 4:40.72. Ching Gan was seventh (4:42.39) and Elyse Heiser was eighth (4:42.82) .
Michigan’s Katie Crom took the third seed in 4:41.27. Nebraska’s Shannon Stott took the fifth seed in 4:41.65.

Big Ten Women’s 200 IM
Ohio State senior Josie Panitz was a half second ahead of the field to take the top spot in the 200 IM. She dropped nearly a second from her seed time and got to the wall in 1:55.75.
Wisconsin junior Phoebe Bacon was a second slower than her seed time and touched in 1:56.13, indicating she might be holding back for a bigger finals swim.
Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski took the third spot in 1:56.32, followed by Michigan’s Devon Kitchel (1:56.55), Minnesota’s Megan Van Berkom (1;56.89), Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze (157.29), Michigan’s Letitia Sim (1:57.72) and Ohio State’s Paige Hall (1:57.91).
Like Bacon, Looze and Sim both added time and could be holding back for the finals.

Big Ten Women’s 50 Free
Ohio State showcased its sprinting dominance by taking four of the top five seeds in the 50 freestyle.
Sophomore Teresa Ivan claimed the top seed in 21.78, just a hundredth of a second ahead of teammate Amy Fulmer (21.79).
Michigan sophomore Lindsay Flynn took the third seed in 21.92, followed by another pair of Ohio State Buckeyes. Katherine Zenick took the fourth spot in 22.03 and Nyah Funderburke was fifth in 22.10.
Indiana’s Ashley Turak was sixth (22.11), Kristina Paegle was seventh (22.17) and Michigan’s Brady Kendall grabbed the eighth seed in 22.21.
