Big Ten Women’s Championships Day 2: Katherine Zenick Leads 1-2-3 OSU Sweep in 50 Free

The 2023 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued from Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the Day 2 finals.

The second-day events are the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 1-meter diving and the 400 medley relay.

Ohio State scored 132 points in the 50 free by going 1-2-3-5-9 in the event, going from fourth place well into first after the event.

Big Ten Women’s 500 Free

Wisconsin sophomore Abby Carlson dropped nearly a second from her prelims time to claim the Big Ten title in the 500 freestyle.

Carlson got to the wall in 4:38.15, an NCAA “B” cut, as the top 19 swimmers in the event achieved.

Indiana sophomore Ching Gan was second in 4:38.96, followed by Michigan freshman Katie Crom (4:39.05) and Indiana sophomore Mariah Denigan (4:40.52).

Wisconsin sophomore Paige McKenna took fifth in 4:40.98, followed by Indiana sophomore Elyse Heiser (4:41.48), Wisconsin freshman Blair Stoneburg (4:42.54) and Nebraska senior Shannon Stott (4:44.45).

Big Ten Women’s 200 IM

Ohio State senior Josie Panitz cruised to a pool record in the 200 IM on her way to claiming the Big Ten title in the event.

Panitz got to the wall in 1:54.96, breaking the pool record of 1:54.97 set by Michigan’s Siobhan Haughey in 2016. The time is an NCAA “B” cut.

Wisconsin junior Phoebe Bacon was one of 16 other swimmers in the field to achieve a “B” cut. She touched the wall in 1:55.06.

Minnesota junior Megan Van Berkom took third in 1:55.67, followed by Indiana’s Noelle Peplowski (1:55.89), Michigan sophomore Letitia Sim (1:56.20), Michigan freshman Devon Kitchel (1:56.36), Indiana postgrad Mackenzie Looze (1:57.38) and Ohio State sophomore Paige Hall (1:57.45).

Big Ten Women’s 50 Free

Ohio State junior Katherine Zenick led a 1-2-3-5 finish for the Buckeyes in the 50 free.

Zenick got to the wall first in 21.85, finishing just a hundredth of a second ahead of senior teammate Amy Fulmer (21.86). Sophomore Teresa Ivan, who had the top seed in prelims, was third in 21.87.

Ohio State sophomore Nyah Funderburke finished fifth in 21.95, finishing behind Indiana freshman Kristina Paegle (21.91).

The Buckeyes scored 132 points in the event with Catherine Russo also taking ninth (22.04). The point total surged OSU into the lead.

Michigan sophomore Lindsay Flynn was sixth (21.99), followed by Indiana senior Ashley Turak (22.35) and Michigan freshman Brady Kendall (22.34), who tied for seventh.

Big Ten Women’s 1-meter Diving

Indiana sophomore Anne Fowler won the Big Ten title in 1-meter diving, earning a score of 324.60.

Michigan freshman Kiarra Milligan finished second with 314.85 points, just ahead of Minnesota senior Joy Zhu (314.40).

Big Ten Women’s 400 Medley Relay

The Ohio State Buckeyes concluded the session with a pool record performance in the 400 medley relay.

The Buckeyes touched the wall in 3:26.68 to break the previous pool record set by Indiana in 2016 (3:30.17).

Nyah Funderburke led off in a 51.90, followed by Hannah Bach (57.53) and a back half that included Katherine Zenick (50.72) as the fastest butterfly split of the race, then Amy Fulmer, who at 46.53 anchored in the fastest time.

Indiana was also under the previous pool record. Anna Peplowski, Noelle Peplowski, Elizabeth Broshears and Kristiana Paegle finished in 3:29.82.

Michigan was third in 3:31.07, behind Casey Chung, Letitia Sim, Brady Kendall and Lindsay Flynn.
