Big Ten Women’s Championship Day 3: Hannah Bach Leads Ohio State Top Seeds

The 2023 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued from Canham Natatorium in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the Day 3 prelims.

The second-day events are the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 free, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke, followed by 3-meter diving in the afternoon.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Butterfly

Ohio State landed four in the finals to lead the way in the 100 butterfly and set the tone for the day.

Junior Katherine Zenick took the top seed in 51.44, an NCAA “B” cut. Right behind her was senior Morgan Kraus (51.75).

The third seed went to Northwestern senior Miriam Guevara (51.78), followed by Wisconsin senior Mallory Jump (52.14), and Michigan freshman Brady Kendall (52.28).

The Buckeyes also took the sixth seed with Tristan Harrison (52.31) and seventh with Aislinn Walsh (52.50) ahead of Michigan junior Natalie Kan (52.57).

Big Ten Women’s 400 IM

Ohio State made it two top seeds in a row as senior Felicia Pasadyn grabbed the top spot in the 400 IM. She dropped a second from her seed time and touched the wall in 4:09.02.

Minnesota junior Megan Van Berkom got to the wall second in 4:09.34, followed by Ohio State freshman Jessica Eden (4:09.77).

Fourth went to Indiana’s Mackenzie Looze (4:10.88), followed closely by Michigan junior Kathryn Ackerman (4:11.08) and Indiana sophomore Mariah Denigan (4:11.27).

Wisconsin junior Callahan Dunn was seventh (4:12.84) and rounding out the finalists was Ohio State junior Kyra Sommerstad (4:13.16), giving the Buckeyes three in the finals.

Big Ten Women’s 200 Free

Just a tenth of a second separated the top two qualifiers in the 200 free.

Indiana sophomore Anna Peplowski took the top seed in 1:44.49, just ahead of Ohio State senior Amy Fulmer (1:44.59).

Three of the top four seeds are sophomores as Wisconsin sophomore Abby Carlson took the third seed (1:44.65), followed by Northwestern sophomore Ashley Strouse (1:45.90).

A pair of freshmen followed as Michigan’s Katie Crom took the fifth spot (1:45.95), followed by Wisconsin’s Blair Stoneburg (1:46.16).

Nebraska senior Shannon Stott was seventh (1:46.46), ahead of Penn State freshman Catherine Meisner (1:46.60).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Breast

Ohio State continued its strong morning by taking the top two seeds in the 100 breaststroke behind its senior leaders.

Senior Hannah Bach grabbed the top seed in 58.32, an NCAA “B” cut that was just ahead of senior teammate Josie Panitz (58.67). They were the only swimmers to break 59 seconds.

Indiana postgrad Noelle Peplowski took the third spot in 59.41, followed by Michigan sophomore Letitia Sim (59.90), who tied Northwestern senior Hanna Brunzell (59.90) for the fourth seed.

Nebraska sophomore Jojo Randby was sixth (1:00.10), followed by Wisconsin senior Elizabeth Moore (1:00.45) and freshman teammate Hazal Ozkan (1:00.55).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Backstroke

Ohio State sophomore Nyah Funderburke made it another top seed for the Buckeyes to close the session.

Funderburke broke the pool record in the 100 backstroke to earn the top seed in 51.44. It bested the previous pool record of 51.52 set by Indiana’s Kate Zubkova in 2009.

Wisconsin junior Phoebe Bacon took the second spot in 51.58.

The next four seeds went to swimmers doing doubles this morning with Indiana sophomore Anna Peplowski taking the third spot (52.34), followed by Northwestern senior Miriam Guevara (52.40), Ohio State senior Morgan Kraus (52.57) and junior teammate Tristan Harrison (52.77).

Minnesota junior River Rodriguez (52.78) and Wisconsin sophomore Mackenzie McConagha (52.87) rounded out the finalists.
