Big Ten Women Day 3: Phoebe Bacon Dominates 100 Back; Miranda Grana Delivers Big Night

The 2025 Big Ten Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships continued on Friday from McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion on the campus of Ohio State University.
The Day 3 finals consisted of the 100 butterfly, 400 IM, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke before the 3-meter diving session and 400 medley relay.
The depth of Ohio State continues to lead the standings.

Big Ten Women’s 100 Butterfly
Indiana sophomore Miranda Grana made a huge start to her double on Friday night with a win in the 100 butterfly.
Grana dropped a half second from her prelims time and won the race in 50.80, the lone swimmer to break 51 in the field.
Michigan took four of the next five spots. Brady Kendall was second in 51.60, followed by teammate Alex Greenhawt (51.65).
USC fifth-year Caroline Famous took fourth (52.19) before the next pair of Wolverines – Cheuk Kan (52.36) and Ella Piersma (52.37).
UCLA fifth-year Emma Harvey finished seventh in 52.39 and Penn State fifth-year Margaret Markvardt was eighth (52.55).

Big Ten Women’s 400 IM
Ohio State freshman Sienna Angove held on to her top seed and led a 1-2-4 finish for the Buckeyes.
Angove won the 400 IM in 4:03.92, an NCAA B cut. Teammate Mia Rankin was second in 4:04.85 and Krista Marlin was fourth in 4:06.79, finishing one spot behind USC sophomore Ashley McMillan (4:05.20).
Wisconsin fifth-year Callahan Dunn finished fifth in 4:07.50, followed by Indiana sophomore Reese Tiltmann (4:07.61), Michigan sophomore Hannah Bellard (4:09.13) and UCLA senior Paige MacEachern (4:11.07).

Big Ten Women’s 200 Freestyle
Michigan sophomore Stephanie Balduccini dropped two seconds from the morning to surge to the 200 free title in 1:41.16, one of three in the field to break 1:42.
USC sophomore Minna Abraham was just behind in 1:41.29, while Indiana senior Anna Peplowski, who broke the Big Ten record leading off the 800 free relay, finished third in 1:41.45.
All three are NCAA A cuts.
Wisconsin senior Abby Carlson finished fourth in 1:44.14, followed by a Wolverine duo of Christey Liang (1:44.34) and Malia Amuan (1:44.59).
Ohio State took 7-8 with freshmen Rachel Bockrath (1:45.20) and Erin Little (1:45.34).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Breaststroke
USC fifth-year Kaitlyn Dobler dropped more than a second from her prelims time to dominate the 100 breaststroke and claim her first Big Ten title.
Dobler, who is an NCAA and multiple Pac-12 champion, is now in the Big Ten for the first time and won the race in 57.41, an A cut.
Michigan junior Letitia Sim finished second in 58.74, dropping nearly a second from prelims.
Ohio State senior Ava DeAngelis finished third in 59.25, just ahead of UCLA freshman Karolina Piechowicz (59.27) and Indiana’s Brearna Crawford (59.52).
Wisconsin junior Hazal Ozkan was sixth at 59.94, followed by Nebraska senior Maia Hall (59.99) and UCLA senior Ana Jih-Schiff (1:00.13).

Big Ten Women’s 100 Backstroke
Indiana fifth-year Phoebe Bacon nearly broke 50 in the 100 back to win in 50.14.
The Olympian spoiled the attempt of Indiana’s Miranda Grana of doubling up on Friday. Grana won the 100 fly and finished second in the 100 back in 50.69, a stellar swim especially considering it was a double.
Indiana went 2-3-5 with Kacey McKenna taking third (50.87) and Mya DeWitt taking fifth in 51.55, one spot behind Ohio State’s Nyah Funderburke (51.18).
Minnesota’s Ava Yablonski took sixth (51.81), followed by USC’s Caroline Famous (51.91), also doing a double, and Michigan fifth-year Casey Chung (51.92).

Big Ten Women’s 400 Medley Relay
Indiana was close to the meet record in the 400 medley relay, using a strong anchor from Anna Peplowski to hold off Wisconsin.
Indiana’s Kacey McKenna, Brearna Crawford, Miranda Grana and Peplowski won the race in 3:26.64 behind a 46.59 on the anchor.
The Badgers finished in 3:28.51 with Margaret Wanezek, Hazal Ozkan, Phoebe Bacon and Abigail Wanezek.
USC got the other A cut in the race with Caroline Famous, Kaitlyn Dobler, Genieve Sasseville and Vasilissa Buinaia getting to the wall in 3:28.85.
Michigan was disqualified for an early takeoff.
