Big Ten Recognizes Michigan’s Orange Bowl Efforts with Weekly Honors

The University of Michigan dominated its competition at the Orange Bowl Classic Tuesday, and a quartet of Wolverines were recognized for their efforts as Big Ten Performers of the Week.
Male Swimmer of the Week
Vinny Tafuto, Michigan
Sr. – Hummelstown, Pa. – Hershey
- Collected four first-place finishes at the Orange Bowl Classic, including top marks in the 50-meter butterfly (23.79) and the 100-meter butterfly (53.86)
- The two-time Academic All-Big Ten honoree set a meet record in the 50-meter butterfly with a time of 23.79
- Contributed to a pair of first-place marks in the 200-meter medley relay (1:38.97) and the 200-meter freestyle relay (1:30.38)
- Earns his first career Swimmer of the Week honor

Freshman of the Week
Jacob Montague, Michigan
Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich. – Grosse Pointe South
- Earned a trio of first-place finishes, helping Michigan to a team title at the Orange Bowl Classic
- Touched first in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke events with times of 28.35 and 53.86, respectively
- Contributed to a first-place result in the 200-meter medley relay (1:38.97)
- Earns his third career Freshman of the Week honor

Swimmer of the Week
Emily Kopas, Michigan
Jr. – Davie, Fla. – University School
- Collected four top-three finishes at the Orange Bowl Classic, setting meet records in the 50-meter breaststroke (31.93), 100-meter breaststroke (1:09.37) and the 200-meter medley relay (1:53.45)
- Touched first in the 50- and 100-meter breaststroke events, recording times of 31.93 and 1:09.37, respectively
- Contributed to a first-place showing in the 200-meter medley relay (1:53.45)
- Earns her second career Big Ten Swimmer of the Week award

Freshman of the Week
Vanessa Krause, Michigan
Chesterton, Ind. – Chesterton
- Collected four first-place finishes in Michigan’s victory at the Orange Bowl Classic
- Touched first in the 50- and 100-meter butterfly events, recording times of 27.84 and 1:00.92, respectively
- Contributed to first-place finishes in the 200-meter medley relay and 200-meter freestyle relay with times of 1:53.45 and 1:42.94, respectively
- Earns her second Freshman of the Week award
