Big Ten Recap: Michigan Tops Iowa; OSU, MSU Win
The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men’s swimming and diving team continued its winning ways, dispatching Iowa (232-121) and Denver (271-80) to conclude a two-day double dual on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.
“I think we had some best times and some best in-season times on both sides,” said head coach Mike Bottom. “Our diving was real consistent, probably the most consistent we’ve been in a long time. As a team, even with some absences, we’re showing that we’re well-rounded, and have enough depth to fill in holes when needed.”
The distance training group had another great showing, going 1-2-3-4 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore Ricardo Vargas, who posted the nation’s top time in the 1,000-yard freestyle last night, won again (4:23.11), followed by freshman Patrick Callan and sophomore Will Roberts, as all three men finished within three seconds of each other. Sophomore Dylan Boyd was fourth.
Two others were repeat winners. Junior Miles Smachlo won the 100-yard butterfly by a 1.5-second margin (47.89), while senior Kai Williams took the 200-yard backstroke by nearly two seconds (1:46.84).
Junior Tommy Cope, junior Jacob Montague and freshman AJ Bornstein combined for a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Cope touching first at 2:00.14. Junior Charlie Swanson took his specialty event, leading a 1-2-3 finish in the 400-yard individual medley (3:53.40) along with Roberts and junior Felix Auböck.
In the women’s meet, freshman Maggie MacNeil set a pool record in the 100-yard butterfly and was one of seven different individual-event winners in leading the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women’s swimming and diving team to a sweep of Iowa (255-97) and Denver (276-77) on Saturday.
Two weeks after setting the school record in a training suit, MacNeil came close to surpassing that mark on Saturday, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 51.57 and establishing a new pool record. Senior Siobhán Haughey, who set her own pool record in the 200-yard freestyle yesterday, came within a tenth of a second of having another, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 48.35.
The Wolverines were dominant in the distance events, going 1-2-3-4 in the 500-yard freestyle behind sophomore Sierra Schmidt (4:53.41). Senior Catie DeLoof, one of the team’s sprinters, went up in distance and took second behind Schmidt (4:54.02), while seniors Becca Postoll and Katie Duggan were third and fourth, respectively.
Junior Miranda Tucker won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.13), combining for a 1-2-3 finish with senior Yirong Bi and sophomore Alex Hughes, while junior Chloe Hicks, a transfer from Virginia Tech, notched her first win in the maize and blue in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.20). Bi came back two races later to win the 400-yard individual medley (4:19.76), just ahead of teammate Kate Krolikowski.
The Wolverines also captured both relays in dominating fashion. The 400-yard medley relay team of senior Taylor Garcia, Tucker, MacNeil and Haughey won by more than six seconds (3:38.13), while the foursome of MacNeil, Haughey, Garcia and DeLoof won the 200-yard freestyle relay by more than three seconds (1:30.88)
