Big Ten Men’s Championships, Night 4: Brendan Burns, Jassen Yep Cap Indiana’s Third Straight Title
A feverish Friday and a solid Saturday morning had Indiana in a powerful position as the Big Ten Men’s Championships headed to their fourth and final night.
Four golds and 10 total medals brought home the banner in emphatic fashion.
The Hoosiers won four events on the final night at the McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, earning Indiana its third straight title and sixth in eight years. Brendan Burns won the 200 backstroke and finished third (behind teammate Tomer Frankel) in the 200 fly. Jassen Yep won the 200 breaststroke, Carson Tyler claimed platform diving and the 400 free relay made it four wins in five team events for the Hoosiers.
The Hoosiers scored 1,520 points, slightly less than the 1,595.5 they used to win last year but more than the 1,499.5 from 2022. Ohio State scored 1,226 points to finish second for the third straight year. Michigan is third for the third straight year with 1,153.5 points.
Michigan’s Gal Groumi, who added the 200 fly title to his 200 IM crown, was named the Swimmer of the Championships. Platform diving champion Carson Tyler of Indiana was the meet’s outstanding diver, and Michigan took home the Big Ten Freshman of the Year award via Colin Geer.

200 backstroke
Make it four Big Ten 200 back gold medals for Brendan Burns, which would be impressive if it wasn’t for the fact that he already has four (and counting) in the 200 fly.
Burns faced a test from a training partner, with Kai Van Westering pushing him the entire way. Burns touched in 1:39.50, well behind his meet record from last year (1:38.22). He was .24 ahead of Van Westering, holding off the junior’s charge coming home in 25.36. Burns was up four tenths at the 150-yard wall.
Third went to Northwestern’s David Gerchik. Fourth was Wisconsin’s Jake Newmark before two from Michigan.

The race for bronze wasn’t boring either. Tomas Navikonis, the 200 free champ, was seventh at the halfway point but surged with the only sub-22 final 50 (21.80) to bronze in 42.22. Penn State’s Victor Baganha was fifth. Indiana went sixth, eighth and ninth.

Jassen Yep went 1:50.40 in finals to win the 200 breast by more than a second over teammate Josh Matheny. It’s a top-four sweep for the championship Hoosiers, with Toby Barnett third and Max Reich fourth. Mariano Lazzerini, the 100 breast winner, was fifth for Penn State.

200 butterfly
Brendan Burns was denied the five-peat in the 200 fly by a pair of great swims by Gal Groumi and Tomer Frankel.
Groumi added his second gold of the meet with a time of 1:39.60. Frankel, the 100 fly champ, added 200 fly silver in 1:39.80. Burns, on the back end of a double, was a second shy of his meet record from 2021 in 1:40.24 but still more than good enough for a medal. Frankel was out front by a second at 150 yards before Groumi chased him down, and Burns nearly did, too.
Michigan was fourth and fifth, with Tyler Ray and Colin Geer.

400 freestyle relay
The 400 free relay shaped up as a victory parade for Indiana, but it was hardly ceremonial. The foursome of Tomer Frankel, Gavin Wight, Rafael Miroslaw and Mikkel Lee won in 2:48.19, but they had a battle with Michigan, just .26 seconds ahead of the Wolverines. They were separated by .01 seconds on the final handoff, but Lee split 41.76 to outdistance the Michigan anchor. Miroslaw, perhaps stung y missing the A final of the 100 free, had the Hoosiers’ fastest split at 41.56.
Bence Szabados had the top split of the race in 41.21 to put Michigan up by eight tenths at the halfway point, he and Gal Groumi combining for a quick front half. Michigan was second in an NCAA A Cut 2:48.45.
Third was Wisconsin in 2:50.48, followed four tenths later by Ohio State.
