Big Ten Men’s Championships, Day 2 Prelims: Gal Groumi Sets Up Big Day for Michigan
It was a big day for Michigan in the first morning sessions of the Big Ten Men’s Championships on Thursday. Led by Gal Groumi securing the top seed in the 200 individual medley, Michigan has seven A finalists across three events with a chance to pounce in the team standings.

500 freestyle
Fresh off a school record in the 200 free on the 800 free relay, Minnesota’s Bar Soloveychik set the top time in the 500 at 4:12.76. That’s more than four seconds quicker than his seed time. Wisconsin’s Yigit Aslan was second in 4:13.35, followed by a pair of Ohio State swimmers. Alex Axon, who entered as the top seed, went 4:14.89, followed by Samuel Campbell. The Buckeyes have four in the A final.

200 individual medley
Gal Groumi makes it two straight Israeli swimmers as top seeds, and he’s leading an all-Israeli, all-Michigan top two. Groumi went 1:41.76 to get to the wall first in prelims. Second was mate Eitan Ben-Shitrit in 1:42.61. Wisconsin’s Dominik Mark Torok finished third in 1:43.07, .01 up on Kaiser Neverman of Minnesota.
Colin Geer was fifth for Michigan, and Jacques Wenger gave the Wolverines a fourth A finalist.
Luke Barr was sixth for Indiana, one of only two A finalists for the Hoosiers on the day. He entered as the second seed in 1:42.88 and went 1:43.45 in prelims.

A time of 19.60 was required just to swim-off for eighth in a fast 50 free. Taiko Torepe-Ormsby of Wisconsin led the way in prelims at 19.15 to grab the middle lane in the final. Second was Michigan’s Bence Szabados in 19.18, backing up his top time in the event entering the meet. Penn State continued a strong meet with Victor Baganha finishing third.
Indiana has an A finalist in Finlay Brooks in fourth, but the Hoosiers will be kicking themselves with there B finalists, both Mikkel Lee and Rafael Miroslaw entering as top-eight seeds by finishing 11th and 12th, respectively, the latter tied with teammate Gavin Wright.
A swim-off is required between Ohio State teammates, with Daniel Baltes and William Fentress each going 19.60.
