Big Ten Championships, Night 3 Finals: Tomer Frankel Claims 100 Fly Meet Record, 200 Free Bronze
Tomer Frankel got the third night of the Big Ten Men’s Championships started Friday with a meet record in the men’s 100 butterfly. Barely a half hour later, Frankel added a bronze medal in the 200 freestyle.
It proved to be the start of a championship-defining night, with the Hoosiers building their way to a triple-digit lead over Ohio State by night’s end. That came on the back of a stellar prelims session in the morning at Ohio State University’s McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion.

100 butterfly
Right out of the gates, Tomer Frankel set a record, in a battle of Israeli stars. Frankel went 44.32 to win and defend his top seed. He held off Michigan’s Gal Groumi, his good friend from back home, who went 44.60. In the process, Frankel took down Groumi’s meet record from last year, which had been 44.50.
Michigan scored enough points to spring into the lead in the team standings. Tyler Ray was slower than prelims to earn a bronze medal in 44.91. Colin Geer finished eighth and Bence Szabados sprang up to ninth in winning the B final. But Indiana neutralized it to a degree with Finlay Brooks, on the front half of a double, in sixth.
David Harabagiu of Minnesota was fourth, ahead of Penn State’s Victor Baganha.

A so-so morning swim landed him just fifth, but all Dominik Mark Torok needed was a lane, the Wisconsin sophomore nearly three full seconds faster at night to win in 3:41.69. He was eight tenths clear of runner-up Toby Barnett of Indiana, an edge he had built by the end of the breaststroke leg.
Barnett, the top seed in prelims, was second in 3:42.49. His points gouged Michigan’s team lead to six points.
Diego Nosack of Northwestern was third, with Ohio State’s Tristan Jankovics fourth.

Ohio State picked up a win in home water courtesy of a feverish finish from Tomas Navikonis. He came home in 23.10 to edge Rafael Miroslaw by .02. Navikonis touched in 1:32.01. Miroslaw came home in 1:32.03.
The consolation for the junior is a 2-3 finish with Tomer Frankel, comfortably home for bronze in 1:32.78, and 20-point lead in the team standings for the Hoosiers.
Minnesota’s Bar Soloveychik was a tenth up on Christopher Morris of Wisconsin for fifth.

Mariano Lazzerini rained on the Indiana breaststroke parade, the Penn State sophomore going 51.08 to spring a surprise over four Hoosiers who queued up for medals – though in the process bulged the lead over Michigan to nearly 100 points.
Lazzerini was second in prelims and went a half-second faster at night in 51.08, the Chilean picking up the win and an NCAA A cut.
First among the Hoosiers was Finlay Brooks, who claimed the silver medal in 51.30 and capped a productive double. Jassen Yep went 51.50 for bronze. Josh Matheny (51.69) and Max Reich (52.18) followed.

100 backstroke
Make it 10 individual Big Ten titles and 21 total for the ageless Brendan Burns. Burns went 44.62 to turn what could’ve been a tight race into a laugher, more than a half-second up on Cooper Morley. The top seed in prelims from Penn State couldn’t match his morning speed of 44.74, but he picked up silver in 45.27.
Indiana took fourth, fifth and sixth with Kai Van Westering, Luke Barr and Gavin Wight. That meant that Jack Wilkening’s silver medal didn’t help Michigan make a dent in the team standings.

That was a pitched battle, with Jordan Rzepka of Purdue getting bronze by the smallest possible margin, .05 points over Ohio State’s Lyle Yost. The 1-meter champ, Minnesota’s Yuton Wang, finished fifth with 416.15 points. Yost’s medal helped Ohio State vault into second place, over Michigan.

200 freestyle relay
The Indiana relay streak ends at three, thanks to a great effort from Wisconsin. With three sub-19 swims, the Badgers got clean water early on the way to an NCAA A cut time of 1:15.35 that is just .07 off the meet record. Taiko Torepe-Ormsby led off with an 18.90, then Andrew Benson’s 18.49 put them out from for good. Ben Wiegand solidified it with an 18.87, then Christopher Morris brought it home eight tenths ahead of runner-up Michigan.
Bence Szabados was outdueled by Torepe-Ormsby by two tenths. Tyler Ray delivered an 18.83 on the third leg for the Wolverines.
Indiana was third, a half-second back after the opening leg. Even sub-19 leg by Mikkel Lee and Rafael Miroslaw couldn’t recoup the deficit. The Hoosiers still had an A cut of 1:16.19.
