Big Night for Gator Swim Club on Day Two of Gainesville Speedo Sectionals

Host team Gator Swim Club won six events on the second day of the 2018 Gainesville Speedo Sectionals. The meet will be held July 6-9 at the O’Connell Center on the University of Florida’s campus.

Day 2 Final Results

Women’s 200 Free

Swimming unattached, Isabel Ivey nearly cracked the two-minute barrier in day two’s opening event. The future Cal Bear won the event in 2:00.08, well over two seconds ahead of the rest of the field.

AquaKids’ Mary Smutny finished second in 2:02.67 while Swim Florida’s Olivia McMurray took third in 2:02.89.

South Florida’s Kathleen Golding (2:02.96), Quest’s Kelsey Dambacher (2:02.97), Bolles’ Kensey McMahon (2:04.14), Gator’s Victoria Bindi (2:04.27) and Saint Petersburg’s Peyton Palsha (2:05.17) completed the A final.

Men’s 200 Free

Gator’s Khader Baqlah was the only swimmer in the field under the 1:50 barrier, getting his hand to the wall first in 1:48.18 for the win.

It was a Gator sweep as his teammates Jan Switkowski was second in 1:50.54 and Mitch D’Arrigo was third in 1:50.73.

Quest’s Clark Beach (1:51.27), Swim Florida’s Santiago Corredor (1:53.32), Bolles’ Caeleb Dressel (1:53.42), Tampa Bay’s Grant Sanders (1:53.70) and AquaKids’ Miguel Cancel (1:55.00) rounded out the top eight.

Women’s 100 Breast

Golden Panther’s Nicole Hunnewell dropped nearly a second from her morning swim to get her hands to the wall first in the women’s 100 breast with a time of 1:13.94.

Saint Andrew’s Shayna Fetes took second in 1:14.76 while South Florida’s Molly Golding finished third in 1:15.12.

East Coast Aquatic’s Ryan Flynn (1:15.51), Gator’s Juliana Lopez (1:15.53), Hurricane’s Andrea Kyriakidis (1:15.66), Madison Aquatic’s Alyssa Silvesty (1:15.76) and Florida Elite’s Elise Ballash (1:16.30) also posted top-eight finishes.

Men’s 100 Breast

Azura Florida’s Marco Guarente dropped over three seconds from his morning swim to post a new personal best time of 1:01.92 in the men’s 100 breast.

Avon Community’s Chandler Bray grabbed second in 1:03.49 while third went to Hudson Explorer’s Ross Palazzo in 1:04.24.

Also swimming in the A final was Club Seminole’s Juan Sequera (1:04.80), Gator’s Enzo Martinez Scarpe (1:04.91), Westminster Academy’s Devion COonley (1:05.09), Pipeline Swimming’s Jared Pike (1:06.01) and Bolles’ Dillon Hillis (1:06.99).

Women’s 50 Back

Gator’s Emma Ball sprinted her way to the women’s 50 back win, getting her hand to the wall first in 28.92 as the only swimmer under the 29-second mark.

Her teammate Caitlin Brooks also cracked 30 seconds, taking the runner-up spot in 29.15 while Lakeside’s Sydney Sell finished third in 30.21.

Fourth through eighth went to Sarasota’s Naomi Chance (30.57), East Coast Aquatic’s Chade Nersicio (30.64), Mary Kelley (30.69), Gabriela Donahue (31.35) and Gator’s Isabella Garofalo (31.92).

Men’s 50 Back

Beach won a close men’s 50 back battle, out-touching his brother by 0.03 for the victory with a final time of 26.29.

His brother and teammate Ethan Beach was right behind him in 26.32 for second and WASC Robinson Molina took third in 26.59.

Bolles’ Dakota Mahaffey (26.94), Performance Aquatic’s Miller Albury (27.72), Flood Aquatic’s Joshua Zuchowksi (28.36), Central Brevard Lucas Kravchenko (28.40) and Saint Andrew’s Joshua Balbi (28.61) rounded out the top heat.

Women’s 100 Fly

Gator’s Talia Bates flew to victory in the women’s 100 fly, stopping the clock in a winning time of 1:00.90.

Silver went to Smutny in 1:01.44 and bronze went to Blue Dolfins’ Abigail Gibbons in 1:01.53.

East Coast Aquatic’s Madison Cummings (1:01.84), Swim Florida’s Grace Redding (1:01.90), GRSC Emily Cordovi (1:02.33), Golden Panther’s Letizia Bertelli (1:02.55) and Swim Florida’s Madeline Burt (1:03.14) completed the top eight.

Men’s 100 Fly

Not too long after winning the B final of the men’s 200 free, Pleasonton’s Maxime Rooney was back in the water to win the 100 fly with a time of 53.31.

Switkowski took second in 54.22 with Episcopal’s Sterling Crane clocking in at 54.89 for third.

Metro Aquatic’s Adrian Aguilar (56.69), Performance Aquatic’s Runar Borgen (56.84), T2’s Mason Laur (57.05), Sequera (57.47) and Storm’s Nicholas Rogers (57.94) also posted top eight times.

Women’s 400 IM

Gator’s Kelly Fertel dropped nearly 13 seconds from her prelims time to take home the women’s 400 IM title in a final time of 4:44.84.

Sarasota’s Emma Weyant dropped over eight seconds to place second in 4:46.54 while K. Golding took third in 4:54.54.

McMurray (4:57.29), Highlander’s Alixandra Roy (4:57.39), Palsha (4:57.44), McMahon (4:59.08) and Gator’s Sydney Kang (5:05.19) also raced in the top flight.

Men’s 400 IM

Gator’s Mark Szaranek cruised to first in the men’s 400 IM, winning by nearly four seconds with a time of 4:21.39.

Saint Petersburg’s Robert Finke finished second in 4:25.14 while Cancel took third in 4:30.92.

Palazzo(4:30.96), Clearwater’s Ricardo Martinez (4:31.63), Alexander Lebed (4:32.28), Bolles’ Jacob Wessell (4:41.17) and John VanDeusen (4:41.56) also competed in the A final.

Women’s 4×200 Free Relay

In what has been a dominate meet for the Gators so far, their A relay team of Fertel (2:03.42), Kang (2:08.53), Lain Shahboz (2:11.55) and Bates (2:08.83) won the women’s 4×200 fee relay in dominating fashion with a time of 8:32.33.

Bolles finished second in 8:41.15 and Gator B took third in 8:42.08.

Men’s 4×200 Free Relay

Metro Aquatic’s Nestor Montero (1:59.07), Aguilar (1:55.75), Andres Wong (1:56.89) and Aitor Fungairino (1:55.12) completed day two with a win in the men’s 4×200 free relay, stopping the clock in 7:46.83.

Gator finished second in 7:48.61 and Bolles took third in 8:04.09.

Prelims for the third day of competition begin tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. EST.
