Big 12 Recap: Texas Tops Texas A&M, Kansas Beats Rival Nebraska

The Big 12 saw an intense weekend of action, headlined with the University of Texas Longhorns taking down the Texas A&M Aggies after a historic loss last year. The Kansas University Jayhawks earned a narrow victory over their rival Nebraska, while the Iowa State Cyclones surpassed conference opponent Texas Christian University.

Texas Takes Down Texas A&M

AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 5 University of Texas Men’s Swimming and Diving team earned a 180-113 win over No. 12 Texas A&M on Friday night at the Texas Swimming Center.

Texas took 11 of 16 events en route to their win over the No. 12 Aggies.

Chris Yeager set the 10th-fastest pace in the NCAA this year with his 9:05.62 in the 1000 freestyle.

Shebat put down the fastest time in the NCAA this year in the 200 IM. He also set the eighth-quickest time in the NCAA this year in the 100 back with a 47.34 time.

The 53.86 by Scheinfeld in the 100 breaststroke is the sixth-fastest pace in the NCAA this year.

Pomajevich set the 10th-quickest pace this year in the 200 fly for the NCAA.

The lady Longhorns extended their dual meet winning streak to 16 wins with the victory.

With this weekend’s win, Texas earned its third-straight top-20 win on the season and fourth-straight over Texas A&M.

Evans set the fastest pace this year for the NCAA in the 1000 freestyle with her 9:47.68. Pfeifer also cracked the top-three in the NCAA this year with a 9:49.02 time.

Adams put down the fourth-fastest pace this year in the NCAA with a 52.56 in the 100 backstroke. She also notched the eighth-fastest in the 200 back (1:55.54).

Kansas Defeats Rival Nebraska

LAWRENCE, Kan.  – The Kansas swimming and diving team set the tone the second they stepped foot inside Bob Devaney Sports Complex at their first away dual of the season in Lincoln, Nebraska.

The Jayhawks left the dual against the Corhuskers with a exciting six-point win of 152-146 and gave it their all in the water.

Saturday’s events started with three wins in a row for the Jayhawks, making it clear that they were not going to make the meet an easy one for the Corhuskers. Kansas put down a total of seven individual wins in the duration of the dual meet creating a drive to win the intense competition.

The victory came down to the final 400-yard freestyle relay of the competition. Junior Jenny Nusbaum, sophomore Manon Manning, freshman Claire Campbell, and sophomore Lauryn Parrish put in a winning time of 3:26.28, the fastest of the season thus far, pushing Kansas past Nebraska.

In the diving well, junior Peri Charapich represented the Jayahkws. Charapich put down career-highs in both the one-meter and three-meter events with scores of 242.85 and 228.97, respectively.

The Jayhawks opened the meet with a first-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay with a winning time of 1:43.91. The relay consisted of sophomore Manning, senior Haley Downey, freshman Kaitlyn Witt and junior Carly Straight.

Junior Nusbaum brought home gold in the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:06.72.

Sophomore Parrish touched the wall first in the 200-yard freestyle, clocking a winning time of 1:52.33.

Freshman Kate Steward claimed a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, finishing in 1:03.53.

Senior Haley Bishop took home gold in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.79.

In the 10th event of the meet, junior Elizabeth Amato-Hanner placed first in the 200-yard backstroke 2:00.53.

Steward put in her second win of the meet in the 200-yard breaststroke with a winning time of 2:18.39.

Nusbaum tagged the wall at 4:55.82 to give herself first-place in the 500-yard freestyle.

In the final and winning event of the evening, the Jayhawks touched the wall first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:26.28. The relay team consisted of Nusbaum, Manning, freshman Claire Campbell and anchored by Parrish.

The Jayhawks are set to host the sixth-annual Kansas Classic, a three-day competition scheduled for Nov. 16-18 in Topeka, Kansas inside Capitol Federal Natatorium.

Iowa State Passes TCU, Falls to SMU

DALLAS, Texas – The Iowa State swimming and diving team (3-2, 1-0 Big 12) split the double-dual in Dallas on Friday night with a 161-135 win over TCU (1-3, 0-2 Big 12) and falling to host SMU (3-1) by a score of 114-184.

Anna Andersen played a key role in the meet, winning a pair of individual events and racing back to put Iowa State in first place after the second leg of the 400 free relay.

The Cyclones opened with a second-place finish in the 200 medley relay. Haley Ruegemer returned to action for the Cyclones, finishing fourth in the 1000 free. Andersonprovided a key performance in the 200 free, breaking her personal-best by over two seconds with a 1:52.04. The time pushed her to 18th on Iowa State’s top performers list.

In the 100 back, Emily Haan and Wyli Erlechman teamed up for second and third overall, Erlechman’s first-career top-three finish.

Martha Haas finished second in the 100 breast, touching at 1:05.13. Following the break, Andersen continued her fast night by winning the 100 free with her best time of the season at 51.36.

Haan and Haas finished in third in the 200 back and 200 breast. Lucia Rizzo ended the 500 free as one-of-three swimmers within .1 seconds, ending in second overall.

Elynn Tan beat all TCU competitors in the 100 fly, finishing in fourth overall. Rizzo took third in the 200 IM, and the 400 free relay squad was touched-out at the finish to take second.

In the diving well, Dana Liva led the way for Iowa State on the one-meter with a 251.25, only .75 away from the top diver. Liva finished with a 231.70 on three-meter, good for fourth, while Alex Aaberg ended the night with a 178.25 on one-meter.

“I was very pleased how our women got out and raced,” head coach Duane Sorenson. “We had a lot of close races, some that didn’t go our way, but I thought we swam even better than we did against Nebraska.”

Iowa State’s next competition will split the Cyclone swimmers and divers. The diving team heads to Iowa for the Iowa Invitational, while the swimmers will be in Topeka for the annual Kansas Classic.
