Only one meet, yet a ton of action around the Big 12 this Friday. Texas Christian University brought both the men’s and women’s teams to Ames, Iowa to take on the Iowa State Cyclones and the South Dakota Coyotes. The University of Texas men’s and women’s teams travelled down south to swim NC State.

The TCU Horned Frogs are coming off of loses against SMU and Kansas while Iowa State just toppled Omaha in their season opener. SDU has suffered a few losses this season but came out on top against Minnesota State a few weeks ago.

The last time these teams got together, on the women’s side Iowa State and TCU tied last year when the Cyclones traveled to Fort Worth. The Cyclones are undefeated in all 15 of their match ups against South Dakota.

Since Iowa State only has a women’s team, the men’s meet today features only TCU and SDU.

Iowa State broke out and won the very first event, the 200 medley relay, with a swift 50 freestyle split from senior Laura Miksch. The cyclones came in at 1:45.04 with Miksch anchoring at 23.22. The Horned Frogs were right behind though with a 1:45.75. The Iowa State ‘B’ relay placed third with a 1:46.20.

Sophomore Keely Soellner proved her freestyle ability by winning herself a pair of races today in the 500 and 1000-yard freestyles. Soeller was 5:05.61 and 10:28.89, respectively in both events while also placing second in the 200-yard distance.

Cyclone seniors Harper Emswiler and Kasey Roberts earned their team a 1-2 finish in the 100-yard backstroke, turning in times of 57.58 and 57.78, respectively. USD’s Sabrina Sabadeanu followed closely with a 57.80.

Iowa State continued their momentum throughout the meet but where the Cyclones lacked, TCU was able to pick up a win. Junior Horned Frog Devin Newton swam her way to victory in the 100-yard breaststroke by going a 1:05.70, a time that is just .15 slower than what she produced last week versus Kansas.

Iowa State senior Mary Kate Luddy blew away the field in the 100-yard butterfly by posting a 56.95, with an impressive 29.82 split on her second 50. Luddy was the only athletes to dip under 58 seconds overall and the only one to have a second 50 split under 30 seconds.

TCU (M) vs. South Dakota (M)*

Despite the notable absence of the Horned Frog’s key freshman standout Joao Andrade, TCU was still able to secure several wins against the Coyotes. One of those wins came in the 200-yard freestyle where freshman/sophomore duo of Matthew Brewer and Tommy Thach produced sub-1:44 performances. Brewer secured his second win of the day in the 100-yard freestyle where he went a 47.51. Brewer was closely trailed by USD’s Hunter Padgett who turned in a 47.93.

TCU gained another 1-2 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke with the same two men who placed first and third against SMU just a few weeks ago. Jacob Swierczynski and Migs Martin each turned in a 57.37 and a 57.55, respectively.

TCU Freshman diver Owen Moncino narrowly took the men’s 3-meter diving event by scoring 313.25 over USD’s Isaac Morris who turned in a score of 310.50. Horned Frogs Derek Bowers and Andrew Shurtleff finished third and fourth respectively.

The Horned Frogs had a 1-2-3 sweep of the 500-yard freestyle with Dayne Odendaal leading the pack in 4:39.64, followed by teammates Kevin Chao and Rhory Legendre who each produced a 4:47.73 and a 4:52.16.

In the last individual event of the day, Thach earned his second win of the meet by posting a swift 1:55.92 in the 200 IM. Thach was followed by teammate, and 500-yard freestyle winner from earlier in the meet, Odendaal. The Horned Frogs went 1-2 in the 400-freestyle relay to close out the meet.

Next on TCU’s schedule is the Texas Invitational while Iowa State is slated to appear at the Kansas Classic.
