Big 12 Championships: Texas Women and Men Dominate Opening Relays
The Big 12 Championships opened up Wednesday evening in Austin, Texas, and as expected, it was the host Texas Longhorns who dominated the first relay events of the competition. This league only includes five women’s swim and dive teams (Texas, TCU, West Virginia, Kansas and Iowa State) and three men’s teams (Texas, TCU and West Virginia), and the national powerhouse Longhorns have long been dominant in conference competition. In fact, the Texas men have won every single Big 12 Championships since the conference’s inception while the women are undefeated since Texas A&M moved to the SEC in 2012.
The Longhorn women and men each posted solid times in the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay to start the meet, although most of the Longhorns fell a bit short of their season and lifetime-best marks with the NCAA Championships still to come.

Women’s 200 Medley Relay
The Texas women beat the next-fastest scoring team by more than four seconds to open competition. The team of Olivia Bray, Anna Elendt, Emma Sticklen and Grace Cooper swam a time of 1:34.21, short of the Longhorns’ season-best time of 1:33.70 from a tight contest with NC State last month. Bray led off in 23.85 while Cooper rocketed to a 21.31 split coming home. The team ranks third in the country this season and will likely enter the NCAA Championships seeded third or fourth in the event.
The second-best time of the day was the 1:36.91 posted by the Texas’ B-squad of Meghan DiMartile, Lydia Jacoby, Dakota Luther and Bridget Semenuk. Officially, TCU finished second with Rylee Moore, Claire Chahbandour, Jeanne Dahmen and Olivia Rhodes clocking a mark of 1:38.62, while West Virginia’s Jaqueline McCutchan, Mia Cheatwood, Harna Minezawa and Ada Szwabinska placed third in 1:39.43.

Men’s 200 Medley Relay
The Texas men won their opening relay of the Big 12 meet by two seconds. Carson Foster, Will Chan, Caspar Corbeau and Danny Krueger finished in 1:23.53. The splits were solid, but the Longhorns’ deficiencies in this event were made clear right away. The time ranks Texas 11th in the country, so the Longhorns will definitely not swim in the fastest heat of this event at the NCAA Championships. The foursome featured Foster, an individual medley and 200 backstroke specialist, leading off with a two-lap backstroke sprint while internationally-ranked breaststroker Corbeau moved to the butterfly leg to handle what would otherwise be the weakest stroke for Texas.
TCU’s Edgar Cicanci, Jadon Wuilliez, Piotr Sadlowski and Raphael Paiva Da Lima took second in 1:25.63, and third went to West Virginia’s Justin Heimes, Danny Berlitz, David Snider and Conner McBeth in 1:26.42.

Women’s 800 Freestyle Relay
The margin of victory for Texas in the longest relay on the program was 19 seconds, and the team of Kelly Pash, Kyla Leibel, Olivia Bray and Erica Sullivan recorded a time of 6:56.49. That was the third-fastest time in the country, behind marks posted by Virginia and Stanford. The team was almost identical to the group that placed fourth at last year’s NCAA Championships with only Sullivan stepping in for the graduated Evie Pfeifer. Pash led off in 1:43.38, six tenths off her season-best 200 free time of 1:42.73 that ranks fourth in the country, while Bray’s split of 1:42.91 was the quickest of the race.
An exciting race for second saw the remaining four teams in the race all finish within 1.2 seconds of each other. West Virginia’s team of Abby Reardon, Gabriela De Laorre, Miranda Kirtley and Morgan Burton placed second in 7:15.56, and third went to Iowa State’s Lucia Rizzo, Brinley Horras, Corinne Guist and Ashley Bengtson in 7:15.87

Men’s 800 Freestyle Relay
The Texas men swam the fastest time in history to win the 800 free relay at last season’s NCAA Championships, and although Drew Kibler has departed the college ranks, the other three Longhorn swimmers are back this year. Texas has an elite squad including U.S. World Championship team members Carson Foster and Coby Carrozza plus 200-meter free U.S. Nationals winner Luke Hobson. In this race, Carson’s older brother Jake Foster handled the third leg, and Texas recorded a time of 6:10.64, about two seconds off the Longhorns’ season best and seven seconds off their national record. Texas currently owns the second-best time in the country, just behind Florida’s mark from last week’s SEC Championships.
Carson Foster had the fastest split of the race at 1:31.76, with Hobson posting the next-best mark at 1:32.29. Carrozza led off in 1:32.65 while Peter Larson led off the Texas B-team in 1:32.50, so he is likely to handle the final spot on this relay at NCAAs next month.
TCU’s Geremia Freri, Milan Fabian, Kornel Kohalmi and Luke Dimiceli grabbed second in 6:23.85, with West Virginia’s Roanoke Shirk, Max Nielsen, Jamin Harlan and William Mullen took third in 6:31.10.
