Big 12 Championships, Day 3 Finals: Coby Carrozza, Kelly Pash Win Second Events of Meet in 200 Freestyle
The Texas women and men each sit almost 500 points up on their closest competitors in the Big 12 just past the halfway point of the meet as both Longhorns teams gear up for making a run in the team standings at next month’s NCAA Championships. The winning steak that Texas set through the first two days of the meet finally came to an end Friday as BYU’s Jordan Tiffany (100 butterfly) and West Virginia’s Danny Berlitz had golden moments, but the women remain undefeated after occupying at least the top-three placements in every swimming event contested.
The top performers of the meet thus far are senior Coby Carrozza and fifth-year swimmer Kelly Pash, both of whom recorded their second individual wins Thursday as both are set up to play central roles in their respective team’s efforts at the national championship meet next month.

Women’s 100 Butterfly
The Texas women have been consistently strong in the women’s butterfly events, and they brought a strong 1-2 punch to the event Thursday evening in Morgantown as Emma Sticklen held off a surge on the final 25 yards by teammate Olivia Bray.
Sticklen clocked a time of 50.61, which ranks No. 6 in the national rankings, while Bray came in second at 50.80. The versatile senior was slightly off her season best time of 50.47 that ranks in a tie for fourth nationally. Behind the top two, Ava Longi made it a 1-2-3 sweep for the Longhorns with a time of 52.28.

Men’s 100 Butterfly
For the first time all meet, a non-Texas swimmer placed first in an event as Brigham Young University’s Jordan Tiffany clocked a mark of 44.51 to dominate the 100 fly. The impressive freshman had already posted a time of 44.85 this season, but his latest mark moves him into the top-eight in the country, giving BYU a legitimate chance at an A-final finish at next month’s NCAA Championships.
Even in a relatively weak event for the Longhorns, Texas picked up second-place points as Cole Crane clocked 46.33, while TCU’s Piotr Sadlowski took third in 46.33.

In another 1-2-3 sweep for the Texas women, Campbell Stoll took the win by nearly two seconds over fifth-year teammate Alicia Wilson and fellow freshman Angie Coe. Coe was actually the dominant swimmer over the first half of the race, leading by more than a second after butterfly before holding the field at bay on backstroke, but Stoll pulled ahead on breaststroke and then crushed the field on the freestyle leg with a closing final 100 yards of 56.86.
Stoll came in at 4:07.14, with Wilson closing well to take second in 4:09.04. Wilson ended up three tenths clear of Coe, previously the top-ranked Texas swimmer this year in the event. Coe touched in 4:09.38 for third.

Men’s 400 IM
For the second consecutive men’s event, a Texas swimmer did not take the win in this event as West Virginia’s Danny Berlitz was the dominant swimmer, taking over the lead from the Longhorns’ Alec Enyeart on backstroke and then pulling away for a win by more than four-and-a-half seconds. Berlitz posted a time of 3:43.02 for the first conference title of his career.
West Virginia actually placed 1-2 as Ivan Puskovitch surged ahead of Enyeart on breaststroke and held on to earn runnerup honors in 3:47.61, 13-hundredths clear of Enyeart’s 3:47.74. It has already been a huge year for Puskovitch, who is qualified to represent the United States in the 10-kilometer open water swim at this summer’s Paris Olympics.

Women’s 200 Freestyle
Kelly Pash, the clear leader of the Texas women in both relays and individual events, has not been at peak form this week at the Big 12 Championships, but she has posted a pair of 1:42s in the 200 free to go along with the 1:42.64 she posted at midseason, which ranks 11th in the country. Pash went 1:42.76 leading off the Longhorns’ 800 free relay two days earlier, and in the individual event, she pulled away from vaunted freshman Erin Gemmell to get the win in 1:42.97.
Texas again swept the top-three spots here, with Gemmell coming in at 1:44.34 for second and Erica Sullivan going 1:46.39 for third. Gemmell represented the United States as part of the 800-meter free relay at last summer’s World Championships while Sullivan is the reigning Olympic silver medalist in the 1500-meter free. Texas’ Emma Davidson was fourth home in 1:47.02.

Men’s 200 Freestyle
The Texas men went two consecutive events without a win, but the Longhorns changed that in convincing fashion in the 200 free with a 1-2-3-4 finish. Leading the way, as expected, was Coby Carrozza, with the senior swimmer clocking 1:32.64 to hold off the field down the stretch. Carrozza, a gold medalist at the 2022 World Championships by virtue of his prelims swim on the U.S. men’s 800-meter free relay, sits in a tie for No. 9 in the country after leading off the Texas 800 free relay in 1:31.97.
Second place went to freshman Nate Germonprez in 1:33.00. It has been a huge start for Germonprez at his first conference meet, with the freshman taking second in the 200 IM as well while posting a pair of swift relay splits in the 200 medley and 800 free on night one. Germonprez actually anchored Texas to an 800 free relay win in 1:31.86.
Camden Taylor took third for Texas in 1:33.90 while Manning Haskal, also of the Longhorns, was the next-best finisher in 1:35.82.

Women’s 400 Medley Relay
No one was going to deny the Texas women in the 400 medley relay as the Longhorns beat their closest competition by close to seven seconds, even without most of their top swimmers going best times. Olivia Bray led off in 51.85, and she was followed by Anna Elendt (56.95), Emma Sticklen (50.51) and Kelly Pash (47.87). The time ranks sixth-best in the country and likely sufficient for a spot in the top heat at the NCAA Championships.
Cincinnati placed second here, with Lily Jones, Joleigh Crye, Grace Gavin and Jessica Davis combining for a time of 3:33.89. Well back in third was TCU’s team of Tania Quaglieri, Nina Vadovicova, Jeanne Dahmen and Olivia Rhodes in 3:37.27.

Men’s 400 Medley Relay
Don’t sleep on this young team of Longhorns in the men’s 400 medley relay, especially with Will Modglin at the helm. Modglin, the two-time winner of Swimming World’s National High School Swimmer of the Year honor, broke 45 in the event for the second time in his career, clocking 44.56. Modglin’s season best of 44.49 ranks him fifth nationally. Modglin was followed by fellow freshman Will Scholtz, fifth-year swimmer Cole Crane and sophomore Alec Filipovic as Texas clocked 3:04.04.
Finishing well back in the pack was the TCU team of Edgar Cicanci, Jadon Wuilliez, Piotr Sadlowski and Raphael Paiva Da Lima at 3:07.77, with Cincinnati’s Hunter Gubeno, Reed Lucero, Drew Hawthorne and Jon Osa taking third in 3:10.43.
