Bell Canadian Trials: Summer McIntosh Wins 200 Butterfly to Expand International Options

The summer-championship schedule of Summer McIntosh continues to expand by the day, with the 15-year-old adding the 200-meter butterfly to her options for the World Championships and Commonwealth Games. Clocking a time of 2:07.60, the rising star won that event on Friday night at the Canadian International Meet Trials in British Columbia.

Live Results

Backing up earlier victories in the 400 freestyle (national record) and 200 freestyle, McIntosh shifted to the distance butterfly and easily bettered the field. Although the teenager was off the 2:05.81 she set earlier this year, McIntosh finished comfortably ahead of the 2:11.68 turned in by Mabel Zavaros for second place.

McIntosh was more than a half-second up on the field after the opening 50 meters and touched the wall at the midway point in 1:00.17. She came through the 150-meter mark in 1:33.55 and closed with a split of 34.05.

Whether McIntosh contests each of the events in which she has qualified for international competition remains uncertain. If nothing else, she has multiple options to consider as she constructs her summer plans. More, over the final two days of the Canadian Trials, McIntosh is expected to see action in the 400 individual medley and 800 freestyle.

While McIntosh is Canada’s future on the women’s side, Joshua Liendo maintained his status as the country’s leading youngster on the men’s side. Already the champion of the 100 butterfly, Liendo secured the 100 freestyle title in 48.35, an effort that edged the 48.41 of Ruslan Gaziev, the winner of the 200 freestyle.

“I definitely wanted to be faster than that but I gave it everything I had,” Liendo said in a Swimming Canada release. “I know I can go a lot faster than that. I have the speed, I just have to work on it.”

Liendo bolted to the lead, covering the front 50 meters in 22.80, with Gaziev staying close in 23.22. While Gaziev closed the gap over the closing 50 meters, Liendo had enough to get to the wall first. Third place went to veteran Yuri Kisil, who went 48.80.

The final of the women’s 100 freestyle turned into a three-way showdown, with Kayla Sanchez clipping 2016 Olympic co-champion Penny Oleksiak by a slim margin. Sanchez stopped the clock in 53.68, just ahead of the 53.71 of Oleksiak. Also dipping under the 54-second barrier was Taylor Ruck, who posted a time of 53.99.

Sanchez, who celebrated her 21st birthday Thursday, narrowly trailed Oleksiak at the turn, 25.99 to 26.08, but was able to pull ahead over the second lap.

“It’s always such a tough race against some of the best sprinter women in the world,” Sanchez said. “To get my hand on the wall first is just a fun feeling. It was rewarding for sure. I know that my parents watch and my goal is to make them proud. Touching first, I immediately think of them. That’s probably the best feeling that I have, just thinking of them watching me win.”

Patrick Hussey won the men’s 200 butterfly in 2:00.60 while 50 breast crowns were claimed by Rachel Nicol (31.36) and Apollo Hess (27.78).
