Wisconsin swimming and diving legend Beata Nelson is rejoining the team, but this time as a volunteer coach, head coach Yuri Suguiyama announced on Thursday.

“We’re really excited to add Beata Nelson to our staff,” Suguiyama said. “From her time here as a Badger to her postgraduate career, she brings a wealth of experience as an elite athlete. Beata’s passion to give back coupled with her ability to communicate will help our team in every phase of their lives in Madison. Not only that, but Beata’s personal growth and development have also been inspiring to everyone who knows her.”

The 13-time All-American and nine-time Big Ten champion holds the collegiate, U.S. open and American record in 100-yard backstroke (49.18). Additionally, she holds the collegiate record in 200-yard backstroke (1:47.24), is the school record-holder in 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly and 200 IM and holds Big Ten records in 100 back (49.18), 200 back (1:47.24) and 200 IM (1:50.79).

“I am beyond thrilled to use the knowledge that I’ve gained from my years as a Badger to help grow this program even further!” Beata Nelson said. “Being able to assist in this new role is very exciting. This is an incredible opportunity and am so honored to not only represent Wisconsin as an athlete but as a coach as well!”

She is also the only woman to break 50 seconds in 100 backstroke six times. Nelson was named the CSCAA Women’s Swimmer of the Year (2019), the Big Ten Swimmer of the Year (2019) and Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships in both 2018 and 2019.

Beata Nelson is a member of the Cali Condors in the International Swimming League (ISL).
