MADISON – Beata Nelson, swimming for Verona Area/Mount Horeb, took down the National High School and 15-16 National Age Group records in the 100-yard fly at the Wisconsin State High School Swimming Championships.
Nelson raced her way to a sizzling 51.70 in the event. That beat the 51.78 set by Katie McLaughlin for St. Margarita High School last year in California, which also stood as the 15-16 National Age Group mark.
Jack Polono was in the stands to capture the historic moment:
Nelson split the race 24.08, 27.62 en route to the record-breaking win. Nelson’s previous best had been a 52.06 from last year’s Wisconsin State High School Championships. McLaughlin split her record 24.49, 27.29.
McLaughlin’s record will stand as the independent school record with Nelson downing Jasmine Tosky’s public school record of 51.92 during prelims in 2011 for Palo Alto High School in California.
Nelson raced to a 53.15 in the 100-yard back to down her state record of 53.19 from last year.
Nelson also led her squad to second in the 200-yard medley relay (1:44.63 behind Arrowhead’s 1:43.96) with a 24.62 relay leadoff. She’s been faster with a scorching 24.02 at the NCSA Spring Junior Nationals earlier this year. Nelson also anchored the winning 200-yard free relay with a 21.83 split as Verona Area/Mount Horeb won in a state-record 1:33.51.

Beata didn’t really have a “calm day otherwise”… She also broke the WI high school girl’s 100 back record in addition to not one but two relays. She’s a beast! Have a feeling we will see her in the Olympics 2016!
Wow! That is a fast 100 Fly! Congrats to Beata.
