During the third evening of finals at the eastern edition of Junior Nationals in Greensboro, Baylor Nelson recorded a stellar effort in the men’s 400 IM, Thomas Heilman broke his third and fourth National Age Group records of the day and Carmel swimmers Berit Berglund and Alex Shackell each recorded swift swims in their own victories.
SwimMAC Carolina’s Nelson dominated the men’s 400 IM. He recorded a time of 3:42.78 that defeated the field by almost five seconds and knocked almost three seconds off his lifetime-best effort. Nelson’s win is his second of the meet after previously topping the 200 IM. Fishers Area’s Kyle Ponsler placed second in 3:47.75, and Kentucky Aquatics’ Jackson Millard placed third in 3:48.41.

In the 100 fly, Heilman trailed Mason Manta Rays’ Carl Bloebaum and Tate Bacon at the halfway point, but he finished in a blistering 24.22. He came into the wall in 45.81 to win by a quarter-second. That beat his prelims NAG record (46.42) by six tenths, which in turn was a half-second faster than Andrew’s time. Heilman had never broken 47 prior to Friday, and now he is on the verge of times that would score at the NCAA Championships — at just 14 years old.

YMCA of Cumberland’s Daniel Diehl led the race wire-to-wire on the way to winning in 1:33.68, while Heilman finished second in 1:34.68, again taking six tenths off his prelims best time and NAG record. His prelims race had beaten his own record by one second. Swim Atlanta’s Sebastien Sergile ended up third in 1:35.19. Sergile raced head-to-head with Heilman before the youngster accelerated on the third 50.
