Baylor Nelson Swims 1:42.01 200 IM, Thomas Heilman Just Misses 50 Free NAG Record at Greensboro Juniors
After breaking 2:00 in the long course 200-meter IM at last week’s U.S. Open, Baylor Nelson continued his impressive run by winning the short course version of the event at the eastern edition of Junior Nationals in Greensboro. Meanwhile, rising 14-year-old Thomas Heilman just missed Michael Andrew’s National Age Group record in the 50 freestyle for 13-14 boys.
Nelson crushed a 1:42.01 in the 200 IM, finishing more than three seconds ahead of runnerup Will Modglin of Zionsville. Nelson, bound for Texas A&M next fall but still swimming for SwimMAC Carolina, swam a time that would have qualified for the A-final at last year’s NCAA Championships. Modglin finished second in 1:45.39, just ahead of Mason Manta Rays’ Gibson Holmes (1:45.50).

In the men’s 50 free, Heilman swam a time of 19.83 to just miss the NAG record of 19.76 that Andrew set back in 2014. At that point, Andrew had already become the youngest-ever professional swimmer, and he would eventually qualify for his first Olympic team this year. We’ll see if Heilman, who represents Cavalier Aquatics, can chase down any other records later this week. Luca Battaglini finished second in the race in 19.96, while Lynchburg YMCA’s Brendan Whitfield just missed breaking 20 seconds as he took third in 20.01.
