Backstroker Katie Cross Will Become a Jayhawk After Verbal Commitment to Kansas
NEW COMMIT: The University of Kansas has received a new verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season and beyond from Kirkland, Wash. native Katie Cross.
Cross, who owns the Winter Juniors standard in the 100 back, swims year-round with Bellevue Club Swim Team and most recently placed 23rd in the 200m back at Pacific Northwest Seniors this past summer. Last winter, she raced three events at Juniors West before going on to finish sixth in the 50 back at Washington SCY Seniors.
Also competing for Lake Washington Senior High School, Cross is a three-time Washington 3A State Championship finalist. She finished fourth in both the 100 free and 100 back as a junior after racing to fifth in the latter during her freshman season.
She told Swimming World:
“With exceptional athlete support, amazing staff, deeply rooted traditions and an excellent academic experience there was no other place for me than KU! I am in love with the team culture and the beautiful campus in Lawrence, Kansas. I can’t wait to be a Jayhawk, Rock Chalk!”
Her best times include:
- 50 back – 26.01
- 100 back – 55.57
- 200 back – 2:01.95
- 100 breast – 1:05.64
- 200 IM – 2:08.17
- 50 free – 24.33
- 100 free – 52.75
Cross will be a valuable asset to the Jayhawks’ lineup when she arrives in Lawrence as a member of the class of 2024 and will add her talents to a training group led by Manon Manning, Dewi Blose, and Sydnie Horne. She will also join Taylor Conley, Brooke Dalbey, Ellie Wehrmann and Emma Walker next fall.
