Backstroker Emily Meilus Gives Verbal Commitment to Virginia Tech
Backstroker Emily Meilus has given her verbal commitment to Virginia Tech, according to her Twitter account. Meilus, who is a rising high school senior has qualified for Olympic Trials in both backstroke events.
She is from Herndon Virginia, and represented Herndon High School at the VHSLA 6A State Championships. Her 2015 100 yard backstroke time of 55.08 stands as the 6A state record. Her best yards 200 backstroke is a 1:54.87.
Her best long course times (and Trials cuts) are a 1:03.38 100 and a 2:13.73 200.
In addition to her backstroke prowess, Meilus can be a freestyle contributor as well. In yards, she has swum a 9:53.44 in the 1000, and a Winter Juniors cut of 16:37.10 in the 1650.
At the 2016 ACC Championships, Virginia Tech had one A finalist in the 200 backstroke- Klaudia Nazieblo, and Meilus would have finished just behind her for sixth place points. By the time Meilus arrives on the Blacksburg campus in the fall of 2017, the two will have one year to train together. Her 100 backstroke is ACC scoring range at the moment, though the H2Okies had only two C finalists in that event this year.
