AZ D1 States: Xavier College Prep Girls Win, Brophy College Prep Boys Sweep Relays

At the 2017 Arizona High School Division I Championships the Xavier College Prep girls came within a tenth of a second of a relay sweep and ultimately secured the state title. It was a rewarding end to a difficult season for the team. Head Coach Maureen Rankin passed away mid-season. Her husband Mark stood in as head coach after her passing and Jen James‘ time as Interim. The two shared Coach Of the Year honors. Rankin’s daughter Mia also took home two top three finishes. Boulder Creek’s Claire Grover put together some of the most impressive performances of the day, including a state record.
Brophy College Prep swept the boys relays while a number of teams secured individual victories. Brophy College Prep secured its 30th straight team title.

Girls
Xavier College Prep knocked the 200 medley relay out of the park. Kaitlyn McCoy, Paola Guerra, Olivia Paliscak, and Mary Roediger combined for a 1:45.97. Paliscak, Roediger, Kelly Scott, and Guerra also combined for a 1:38.22 for gold in the 200 freestyle relay.
Perry sophomore Kalli Fama broke away from the field to win the 200 free in 1:49.29. HIGH’s Kyla Yetter claimed silver (1:50.51) and Chandler’s Destiny Kling (1:51.25) rounded off the top three. Yetter later won the 100 free (51.86) while Mountain View’s Mackenzie Baird and Rincon University High’s Kristen Alicea Jorgensen tied for second in 52.66.
King touched in 4:55.75 in the 500 free, just before Xavier Prep freshman Mia Rankin (4:55.93).
McCoy earned her second gold of the afternoon with a 2:03.07 200 IM. Chandler’s Sydney Chun (2:04.14) and Rankin (2:04.68) were also in the top three. McCoy was on top again with a 55.05 100 back. Fama finished second (56.30).
Claire Grover of Boulder Creek was well ahead in the 50 free with her 22.87. That time was a new state record. She also dominated the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.97, a new lifetime best by three tenths.
Olivia Grossklaus, a senior from Red Mountain won the 100 fly in 54.62 and Pinnacle’s Gabby Lizzul was second (55.73).
Chadler prevented a Xavier relay sweep by just .09. Charlotte Stenmark, Adhlyn Reidhead, Chun, and Destiny Kling touched in 3:32.34 while Xavier’s Maddie Wright, McCoy, Rankin, and Vica Dow hit the wall in 3:32.43.
Boys
Brophy College Prep and Mountain View separated themselves from the field in the 200 medley relay. Matt Milovanovic, Patrick Schramm, Michael Niezgodzi, and Dane Nelson hit the wall in 1:34.00. With a 1:35.02 the Mountain View team of Trey McDaniel, Chris Allen, Brian Rawlinson, and Nick Moreno were second.
The top four boys were all within eight tenths in the 200 freestyle. Chandler’s Terry Yang got to the all a half second ahead of the next best with his 1:40.01. Corona del Sol’s Benjamin Quon (1:40.52), Pinnacle’s Dyland Melin (1:40.68), and Allen (1:40.84) followed.
Chandler’s Michael Klauss won the 200 IM with a 1:51.86. Two boys were under 50 in the 100 fly: Rincon University High’s Barberii Drake (49.30) and Klauss (49.70).
Tai Combs, a Perry senior, touched in 20.70 to win the 50 free. His teammate and fellow senior Kaden Miller joined him on the podium with a 20.95. Miller then secured the victory in the 100 free in 46.04. Allen (46.38) and Combs (46.48) were just behind in second and third.
Desert Mountain’s Tanner Falls just beat Chandler’s Terry Yang 4:31.23 to 4:31.40 for the 500 freestyle gold.
Using AJ Frakes, Dylan Krueger, Grant Teisen, and Parker Hughes Brophy College Prep added to their relay victory total with a 1:25.87 200 freestyle relay win.
The top five 100 backstrokers finished within .34 of one another. Mountain View’s Brian Rawlinson got his hand to the wall first in 52.04.
Schramm got to the wall in 57.54 to win the 100 breaststroke. Pinnacle freshman Aaron Rosen (59.49) and Corona del Sol’s Reese Latto (59.55) picked up silver and bronze.
Brophy completed the relay sweep as Frakes, Nelson, Hughes, and Niezgodzki touched in 3:06.49 to win the 400 freestyle relay.
