NEW COMMIT: Distance ace Alex Ispas of Coto de Caza, Calif. has announced his verbal commitment to Northwestern University as a member of the Wildcats’ class of 2025.

He will arrive in Evanston, Ill. at the start of the 2021-22 season along with Tyler Lu and Daniel Matheson.

He told Swimming World:

“I am proud to announce my verbal commitment to swim and study at Northwestern University. I would like to thank everyone that has supported me through this process. Go Cats!!! ?”

Ispas, who does his club swimming with Mission Viejo Nadadores, raced four events at the Toyota U.S. Open in December and most recently posted a pair of top-20 finishes at College Station Sectionals in March. In 2018, he raced to 18th place in the mile at Juniors West.

While representing the Austrian Swimming Federation internationally, Ispas competed in three events at the 7th FINA World Junior Championships in Budapest. He also placed 13th in the 1500m free and 15th in the 800m free at the LEN European Junior Championships last summer.

His best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:41.65
  • 500 free – 4:30.52
  • 1000 free – 9:23.49
  • 1650 free – 15:34.64

Also competing for Santa Margarita Catholic High School, Ispas finished 12th in the 500 free at the CIF State Championships during his sophomore season. He placed ninth in that event, as well as 13th in the 200 free, at the CIF Southern DI Section Championships the week prior as well.

Ispas would’ve finished 23rd in the mile at the 2020 Big Ten Championships. Northwestern finished fifth overall in the team standings at last seasons’s conference meet, and Katie Robinson has recently been tabbed the Wildcats’ new head coach.
