Australia’s Rooney Decides to Swim at Aussie World Champs, Dual Meet Trials
By Stephen J. Thomas
SYDNEY, Feb. 17. THERE have been several developments of interest in Australian swimming the past few days.
Giann Rooney has done an about face and will swim the 50 and 100 back at the World Championship Trials next month (which will also serve as the selection meet for the USA vs. Australia dual meet), given that Dyana Calub has now retired. However she will not swim the 200 free, her best event.
Rooney and her boyfriend, Michael Klim, have also split up.
Petria Thomas is still having problems associated with the abdominal surgery we reported in December.
As reported here last November, Thomas' former coach, Mark Regan, who resigned as head swim coach at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra, has been appointed national team head coach for Denmark. Regan has coached Danish Olympian Mette Jacobsen in the past.
