Australian Trials (Day 6): Cameron McEvoy Rockets To No 1 In The World With A Sizzling 21.27 to set pool alight in Melbourne

Triple Olympian Cameron McEvoy has today rocketed to number one in the world in the 50m freestyle with a sizzling heat swim of 21.27 to set the Melbourne Aquatic Centre alight on the final day of the World Trials.

The recently turned 29-year-old, who has been training under coach Tim Lane at Brisbane’s Somerville House school program, clocked a massive personal time that would have won him last year’s World Championships in Budapest.

A time that would also have won him silver behind American Caeleb Dressel (21.07) at the Tokyo Olympics.

The fastest McEvoy has swum in seven years when he clocked 21.44 to win the 2016 Olympic Trials in Adelaide – the equal 11th fastest time in history alongside Brazil’s Bruno Fratus and Russian Vladimir Morozov.

And now the second fastest all-time Australian, edging just in front of former world record holder Eamon Sullivan’s 21.28 (set at the 2008 Olympic Trials in Sydney) – and just shy of Ashley Callus’ Australian Record of 21.19 set at the 2009 Australian Championships, in a “Supersuit.”

Brazil’s Cesar Cielo holds the world record at 20.91 – also a “Supersuit” time swum at the 2009 Brazil Open.

McEvoy will line up in tonight’s final against Isaac Cooper (St Andrews, QLD) who also clocked a personal best time of 22.03 this morning – the ninth fastest Australian with Thomas Nowakowski (Somerset,. QLD) who is coached by Sydney 2000 Olympic relay golden medallist, Callus.

IN other events today, Meg Harris (Marion, SA) is the fastest qualifier into the women’s 50m freestyle final ahead of Shayna Jack (St Peters Western, QLD) 24.54, Emma McKeon (Griffith University, QLD) 24.58, Bronte Campbell (Cruiz, ACT) 24.82, Madi Wilson (Marion, SA) 24.96, Mollie O’Callaghan (St Peters Western, QLD) 25.08, Olivia Wunsch (Carlile, NSW) 25.22 and Milla Jansen (Bond Swimming, QLD) 25.35.

Tokyo Olympian and Australian record holder Matthew Temple (Marion, SA) is the quickest in 100m butterfly in 52.01, in a final that will feature Cody Simpson (Griffith University, QLD) 52.32 and Kyle Chalmers(Marion, SA) 52.39.

While Se-Bom Lee (Carlile, NSW) 4:20.25 and Jenna Forrester (St Peters Western, QLD) 4:42.85 are the resp3ctive fastest qualifiers into the men’s and women’s 400IM.
