AUSTRALIAN TRIALS, Day 3, Cam McEvoy The Top Qualifier For The 50m Freestyle Final In A Sizzling 21.43; Joined by Isaac Cooper And Kyle Chalmers

Australia’s 2023 world champion Cam McEvoy has sizzled in this morning’s 50m freestyle heats, clocking 21.43 – a top five time in the world this year – as he eyes tonight’s final and a place in his fourth Olympic Games in Paris.

The just turned 30-year-old from Somerville House Swimming (QLD) and coached by Tim Lane, was well under the Games QT of 21.88 and well ahead of his nearest rival, Ben Armbruster (Bond, QLD) who went a personal best of 21.91 – the equal eight fastest time by an Australian.

World championship finalist in 2023 and 2024, Isaac Cooper (St Andrews, QLD; Coach: Ash Delaney) won his heat in 21.92 and goes in third fastest ahead of Jamie Jack (St Peters Western, QLD; Coach Dean Boxall) – Shayna Jack’s 21-year-old brother in 22.08 and Olympic and world champion 100m freestyler Kyle Chalmers in fifth in 22.12.

Rounding out the top eight are Thomas Nowakowski (USC Spartans, QLD; Coach Mick Palfrey) 22.23; Will Yang (SOPAC, NSW; Coach Adam Kable) 22.24 and Jack Cartwright (St Peters Western, QLD; Coach Dean Boxall) eighth in 22.28.
