AUSTRALIAN SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS: World champion Mollie O’Callaghan Heads Qualifiers Into Opening Night’s 100m freestyle final in 53.52
World and Commonwealth Games champion Mollie O’Callaghan (St Peters Western, QLD) will lead an all-star cast into tonight’s 100m freestyle final, on the opening day of the 2023 Australian Swimming Championships on the Gold Coast – winning her heat in an impressive 53.52.
In another show of strength by Australia’s top freestyle sprinters – the first four qualifiers for tonight’s 10-swimmer final were all under 54 seconds.
O’Callaghan, heat two winner, Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Shayna Jack (St Peters Western, QLD) 53.72; heat three winner, Olympic champion Emma McKeon (Griffith University, QLD) 53.81 and heat one second placed Meg Harris (53.91) round out the top four.
And hot on their heals were four-time Olympian, 30-year-old Cate Campbell (54.17) who was second to McKeon in 54.17, and Tokyo relay gold medallist two-time Olympian Madi Wilson (Marion, SA) second to Jack in 54.19.
Jack has already posted 53.12 (second fastest time in the World) at the NSW State Open this year and Campbell her own 53.52 in her comeback swim at the Brisbane Metropolitan Meet.
