ASCA Announces Six Finalists for 2022 George Haines Coach of the Year

The American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) has named six finalists for its 2022 George Haines Coach of the Year award.

Todd DeSorbo, Dave Durden, Ray Looze, Greg Meehan, Anthony Nesty and Michael Norment have been named finalists for the award, which highlights swimming excellence at the world level.

All six finalists coached athletes who won gold medals at the recent World Championships in Budapest. This award is given annually to the individual whose coaching effectiveness has contributed the most towards American swimming excellence at the World level. The 2022 ASCA George Haines Coach of the Year winner will be revealed on Sept. 8, 2022, at the Awards Banquet during the ASCA World Clinic at the Westgate Resort in Las Vegas.  For more information on the ASCA World Clinic, go to www.ascaworldclinic.com.

Achievements at the 2022 World Championships in Budapest:

Todd DeSorbo, the head coach at the University of Virginia, coached medalists Alex Walsh and Kate Douglass.

Dave Durden, the head coach of the men’s team at the University of California Berkeley, coached multiple gold medalist Ryan Murphy.

Ray Looze, the head coach at Indiana University, coached multiple gold medalist Lilly King.

Greg Meehan, the head coach of the women’s team at Stanford University, coached multiple gold medalists Torri Huske and Regan Smith.

Anthony Nesty, the head coach at the University of Florida, coached multiple gold medalists Katie Ledecky, Bobby Finke, Caeleb Dressel and Kieran Smith.

Michael Norment, an assistant coach at the Georgia Tech University, coached gold medalist Nic Fink.

The ASCA Coach of the Year has been awarded since 1961.  Past recipients include many greats in the profession, including George Haines, for whom the award is named, Doc Counsilman, Eddie Reese, Bob Bowman, Gregg Troy, Jon Urbanchek and many others.
