As NCAA Men’s Champs Approach, A Look At the Psych Sheets; Several Intriguing Matchups on Tap
With the NCAA Women’s Championships over, and the University of Virginia claiming a second straight team championship, attention will now turn to men’s championships. The competition will also take place at the McAuley Aquatic Center in Atlanta, with Texas as the defending champion and set for its latest duel with Cal, the Pac-12 champ.
There are only two swimmers who have multiple top seeds in the meet. Arizona State’s Leon Marchand has the top spots in the 200 IM and 400 IM. Meanwhile, Minnesota’s defending NCAA champion Max McHugh has the top seed in both breaststroke events. The relay action is spread out, as five different schools earned top seeds.
Carson Foster will swim the 200 backstroke in addition to the IM events. Florida’s Kieran Smith will swim the 200 backstroke in addition to the 200 and 500 free and Harvard’s Dean Farris will swim the 50 and 100 free, but instead of the 200 free, where he holds the NCAA record, he will swim the 100 backstroke. Georgia’s Matthew Sates will swim the 200 butterfly in addition to the 500 free (top seed) and 200 free. Indiana’s Brendan Burns had a lot of options. He is the top seed in the 100 backstroke and will swim the 100 butterfly, opting for the shorter events.
